Bowl games in critical condition

Only thing keeping them afloat is tv money.

And how long will that last when people no longer care about bowl games outside the playoffs?

Maybe scheduling and playing these games for local consumption would work out better. E.g. BSU vs. UW at the Seahawks stadium.
And like PSU should be doing on 12/27, take the opportunity to look at next season's players in action.
It would be great to see PSU's "scrubs" at the WR and RB positions. Even young Arrington.

And add opt-outs to Steve Cortes's list. I mean, in some cases the teams taking the field at these games only vaguely resemble the regular-season version after all the NFL draft picks say no thanks.

Of course Notre Dame did one better than that by opting the entire team out...and good for them. These games have become a largely meaningless exercise, and that was widely predicted when the expanded playoff was instituted.

Exactly. The current situation is such that, if you aren’t in the playoffs , you’re literally irrelevant. —The opt outs have massive effects. The team that earns/ gets invited to the non playoff bowl, does not resemble the team that shows up….and nobody shows up to see them, understandably — The PSU team that lost to Ole Miss a few years ago was without an inordinate amount of starters/important contributors….very disproportionate to Ole Miss opt outs ( they had more underclassmen/non draft year players as starters). —Many bowl games will be lost if the system continues to unchanged. Unfortunate.

Bowl games have been meaningless for years - opt outs, coaching changes. Now with Kiffin's latest move, the playoff has become not meaningful enough to keep people engaged.

Yup, we're already down three of our best players for the Pinstripe Bowl...and I think there'll be more on that list in the coming days.

Seriously, what's the point. OK, more practices. Looking ahead to next season, that's good. Still, it doesn't change the fact that the team showing up to play these non-playoff bowls is often very different from the one that fans fervently followed during the season. So if the best players opt out, why wouldn't the fans opt out too?

I'll watch but won't travel. I did for 2 of the playoff run games last year. They mattered. Who knows though next season? If we fall short of the playoff with our transition roster but land in a nice destination for a bowl game, maybe I'm in?

I'll be on the road traveling between family members in Pennsylvania and Virginia over that weekend but will definitely watch if I can. At minimum, I hope I can get the radio call if it comes to that.
