Coach Campbell’s first major challenge

He brought his receivers coach from Iowa State wigh him. Now there are credible reports he is leaving to coach for the Green Bay Packers!

Going to be interesting to see how he handles this surprising development.

What are the differences between a good receivers coach and a mediocre or bad one? Serious question. What are this guy's methods versus say Hagans? Is it separation techniques? Jump balls? Repetition? To me, the receivers were more successful when Grunk was throwing and Terry instructed Kotelnicki to get back to basics.

Run at the defender, get him to turn the hips one way, then cut the other way.
I like this 20-yard shuttle with the 90° cut.

IMHO, if you're not getting separation, then something's not working.

Good questions. One would think with all the national camps, coaching seminars, the coaching merry-go-round that every coach at top programs would all know the best techniques.

I think personality is a huge factor. Who can push players without antagonizing them. Who can get kids to change and adapt. Who can get a player to keep his head and confidence up whfn struggling.

Overall scheme is also big. We all saw the difference after Smith took over. Scheme affects the defense in ways that allows the passing game to open up.

But for a position coach, it is more sbout motivation, teaching, relating understanding. As someone once said ‘ half of this game is 90% mental.’

Why is this bad? The NFL came knocking with a job that is an upgrade and, in all likelihood, more money.
Well, there is this thing called honoring your word. You don’t jump in two months after signing a contract. Which was probably for more than one year…..probably three.

Second, terrible to do this to players you helped recruit. Pretty 💩y in my opinion.

This is not some middle manager in a large corporation, easily replaced. He recruited kids making one of the most critical decisions of their lives.

Also very unfair to the head coach that brought him in. Makes him look bad. Puts big pressure on him to find a replacement this late in the process.

Just low class all the way around.

Maybe, but I suspect MC is happy for him and re: the players "he recruited ... making one of the most critical decisions of their lives," I'm not sure you can hold that opinion any longer in the portal/NIL era. These kids are paid free agents that all just left an institution they had given their "word" to.

Folks need to remember, this is football, not corporate America. What's the right thing to do does not play a part, and all coaches know this. It's a timing issue and the NFL directly affects the NCAA. It's simple reality.

Well, players moved to DC, enrolled in school. Portal window closed.

Now they are stuck for a semester. Have to participate in spring practices. Or sit out and lose time.

Then transfer in summer. Join a team already behind. Need to learn new scheme. New techniques. New staff. New teammates.

Do you know they're going to enter the portal? Have to see who the new hire is.

Respectfully Spin, none of what you say matters. Jobs open when they open in the coaching carousel. As for kids being "stuck," there has never been and will never be a guarantee. Franklin got fired mid-season and ever player that had committed to him was "stuck for a semester."
I'll be honest. We're talking about kids in college who also play football. The fact that these kids are getting paid, getting a free college education, and have the unbelievable opportunity to play major college football have to "suffer" through a semester of playing for a coach they didn't hand select as their preferred position coach, isn't even on my list of Top 100 things that keep me up at night.

We need to keep who we have as the projected starters or we are in trouble. That is Howard and I think the two ISU guys who came over. If they don't like who we bring in then they could leave in the summer. Although working to our advantage is it is really late to transfer in the summer so hopefully that doesn't happen.

I think that's the key thing. It sucks that he had to know he was probably leaving on Wednesday, but jobs with a team like the Packers don't come open that often, so I understand him taking it. It speaks well to the kind of coaches that Campbell's had as assistants that they are being hired for jobs like that. Can he find someone of similar quality to replace him on short notice? If he nails this hire, then he'll be just fine.

Since he interviewed for the 49ers OC job last year, Campbell knew he was receiving NFL interest and likely has contingencies in place. I'm confident that he'll find someone capable as a replacement. Far more than I was in James Franklin. Franklin could not get that position right while here for whatever reason.

This ^^^. Unless he was interviewing behind MC's back he had to be aware it was only a matter of time until he lost this coach to the NFL and have backup plans in place.....at least I hope this is the case
