Is there any chance he leaves on his own accord after this year if say we finish 9-3 and miss the playoff or even a first rd playoff loss?

He has to be feeling the pressure of failing in all these games. Next year won't be better, nor the foreseeable future. This year was his opportunity.

Maybe Kraft urges him to move on, tells him he has lost confidence in him. Perhaps big money donors weigh in and threaten a pull back in NIL support. Maybe his agent starts floating his name out there.

I thought about Va Tech as a decent landing spot for James. His ego (and wallet) may outright reject this option but it can make sense. A program with a strong fan base, good tradition, James knows the recruiting area well. With a good coach they can climb back to a to a top 15ish type program. He can get programs from bad to pretty good or from pretty good to very good. Playoff appearances are a possibility. No OSU or Michigan or Oregon to deal with year in and year out. He won't get the deal he has now but maybe a five year deal at $6 million a year? How much money does he need at this point? He has set up his family financially for generations.

It could be unbearable for his family to live in SC with all the criticism he will be facing.

The clowns running Penn State love him.

When he talked to the press yesterday, he looked like the pressure is getting to him. Maybe I am perceiving this wrong, but his energy seemed different
Of course he's feeling the pressure. Hopefully the offense can make a course correction these next three weeks and the other LBers step up their game to replace Rojas.

If you are Kraft and let's say we go 9-3 and miss the playoffs or even make it but lose in the first round. What is your evaluation of the state of the program at the end of the season? How are you feeling about the next 3 years? Our recruiting classes for '23-'26 are ranked in the mid teens. The QB position doesn't look like we have a game changer. Is Huhn the savior? Grunk? We thought Allar was. You can't rely on the portal to save you. I guess we change OCs.....again. Replace the WR coach and QB coach. If we really want to achieve elite status and legitimately compete for a national championship (Kraft's stated goal) then we are not on a good trajectory to get there.

I know it sucks not getting over the hump against Oregon ( and OSU, and ND), but sheesh……There are about 135 teams in division 1, and he can beat about 130 of them. I wouldn’t expect him to ( or want) leave. —Hypothetically, if he did leave, you can bet your a** that a large part of the team would portal with him….and half of the recruiting class would follow.
—It’s sometimes painful, but he’s been going in the right direction for 10 years…the aforementioned exceptions notwithstanding

Why would he leave except for the pressure of losing big games. Why would he want to take a step back to coach at a place like VT? Who else is going to pay him more than he's making at PSU?

I don't like your 135 team analogy. That includes teams like Eastern Michigan, Nevada, Texas El Paso, etc. Take those out of the mix and you're down to about 50 teams that could remotely be called major college football. Of those PSU is easily top 20 in money, facilities, fan base, etc. IMO that's what we're competing against.

I agree that some players would portal out and follow Franklin but only if they could earn as much money elsewhere. I doubt that too many players would go from $300,000 to $100,000 because they love Franklin.

I'm not so sure about being on the right track for 10 years. Franklin inherited a sanction depleted team so I think he should be measured on his 9 subsequent seasons. He did a good job getting PSU back up to speed (except for two inexplicable seasons during Covid) but he's only had two top 10 recruiting classes and none in the last 3 years. I'd say we're more of a top 15 team that has had a couple of good years on the strength of the 6th ranked 2022 recruiting class. It's impossible to spin 1-15 against top 5 teams.

Lots of possible scenarios, but let's let the season play out a bit before we worry about that.

I'm glad we have an away game this week.

Not really an analogy….more of an empirical fact ( until today’s UCLA game). But I get your angst
