Would really like to know (and hope there’s some articles on this over the next few days/weeks):

-what happened to this team? More specifically, what went on the week before UCLA?
-was Franklin put on notice after Oregon? On the flight home from LA? Last night, this morning??
-who picked up the tab? And was anything negotiated in the firing (ie did he really get $50 mill?)?
-how many calls was Kraft getting after Oregon, after UCLA, last night/this morning?
-how is Cignetti pulling this off at IU? And what does PSU need to pay to get him? I can’t imagine he wouldn’t at least listen. He’s at Indiana for crying out loud.

A friend of mine told me this about an hour ago, Adidas called craft after the game and told him that he had to do something. There’s no way they wanted their recent flagship investment to go sour before they even got the gear on. I believe they’re helping at least a little bit with the buyout. Which it seems like it’s only going to be his annual yearly pay per year And not a lump sum. Then if he gets hired somewhere else, Penn State would only pay the difference.

He apparently can look at a player whether he is a 1 star or 5 star and tell how good he is or will be, well, I guess he doesn't get 5 stars. I know everyone hates Harbaugh but that is what made him successful. Also, he brought in 23 transfer portal players in one year, and maybe just got really lucky at picking quarterbacks, time will tell.
I'm really surprised they fired Franklin, I think he should have, or started to lean more to bringing in transfers like Cignetti is doing, it has to be easier to judge players going against other college players rather than them going against High School players.. Franklin is just not good at judging the skill level of High School players, I mean how many wide receivers has he recruited that panned out? Good grief.

If Franklin is smart he will take a job down south where there are more 4 and 5 star defensive tackles around, he will surely work harder than ever to be successful to prove everyone wrong, and get the "big game James'' monkey off his back.

You bring up a good question. Does Franklin's buyout restrict him from coaching elsewhere? Does he forfeit his money if he coaches elsewhere?

Tengwall said/posted that this is not the truth. The contract doesn't even start until next season. But I am pretty comfortable stating that the $700m stadium renovation and the Adidas contract were on the minds of the PSU puppet masters.

That kind of surprised me, since he played the game (granted, it was D2) and was an NFL assistant. They said Bill O'Brien was more of a ball coach, the kind who would sit and break down film all the time.

That explains why Franklin wasn't good at getting the team ready for big games where the other team had similar or better talent. He couldn't overwhelm them with a talent advantage.

I don't want O'Brien back, but I think PSU needs something in between the CEO coach and the guy like O'Brien who knows the football side of it inside out, but maybe hates the other aspects of the job.

The only way I see Franklin winning it all somewhere is if he gets so much talent that even he can't screw it up. If he actually has to coach X's and O's, it's probably not happening.

This is not remotely true regarding Adidas.

I feel like this is correct. I've heard that he is a micro-manager. I've worked for micro-managers and when things are going good, it is OK. But when things get bad, people are in survival mode and stop listening. I heard this about Yurcich. I heard that Mike Y started withholding information or changing it after meetings. Specifically, I heard that the OC and DC submit general game plans to CJF on Monday. CJF would make "recommendations" that weren't really recommendations but orders. MY felt the recommendations were bullshit so started to say and do things counter to the Monday meeting content. It became apparent to CJF. At first, it was considered game time adjustments. But later, it was apparent that MY was simply telling him stuff to get him off his back and not following through with it. That led to MY's immediate dismissal.

I don't think he'll be unemployed long, assuming he wants to coach next year.

CBS says he's a "red-hot" coaching commodity and schools will be lining up to hire him. Link below.

You gotta believe he's secretly very relieved. He walks away from this train wreck in wonderful financial shape with an opportunity for a fresh start.

In other words, Franklin's in excellent shape. Penn State's football program: not so much.
