Jeremiah Smith says No Need for College Football Stars to go pro quickly because of NIL

Jeremiah Smith would obviously be a very high draft pick. Here is what he said about NIL affecting the eagerness of players to enter the draft. "“But how college is now, you’ve got NIL. You’ve got all types of stuff. ... People are getting blessed with all types of money now. I don’t think (anybody) in a rush to go the NFL anymore.” https://www.cleveland.com/sports/20...n-an-old-superstar-problem-jimmy-watkins.html

Huge change for college football.

The roster retention your Buckeyes had last year and my Lions this year are a direct product of NIL. I think that is a good thing as more players are finishing degrees instead of 3 and done to the league.

For every Smith, there are probably a million other athletes who aren't pro ready. I don't know that I like the rule though. If he wanted to turn pro and somebody wanted to draft him, why not let this occur?

I'm willing to bet Smith has better advisors than Clarett ever did. Clarett put his career on the line and obviously didn't continue working out and it ended up costing him.

That dude is getting paid HUGE. Maybe $2 mill a year, $3 mill or more?

I like him in college because he has to be taking classes toward some kind of degree that will help him down the road. I don't like him in college because we have to play against him.

A lot less money than he would make in the NFL but still a lot of money. He has a ridiculously good work ethic and probably thinks he will learn more in a more relaxed atmosphere in the next year than would occur in the dog eat dog NFL.

Even 3 million a year is a bargain for Ohio State.

I wonder if the NFL will be do something to sweeten the pot. Maybe adjust rookie contracts up for players who have higher NIL deals. The way high draft-pick QBs are treated I would stay in school as long as possible. An extra $1-$2 million the first year isn't worth it if you're thrown to the wolves. They don't give early draft.picks much slack. If there's anything at all to fix stay in school rather than become damaged goods.

My guess is no. They are already fighting for ethics/arrest types of clauses due to the guaranteed money that's being signed over.

I wondered the same thing, then I remembered they are a massive money machine. Unless they are feeling anything monetarily from drops in attendance or ratings, they will not change a thing in my opinion.

The NFL loves NIL if I didn't know better. These kids are getting money and agent education 4-5 years before ever becoming draft eligible. The ones who were gonna get an NFL payday and flame out instantly are now flaming out at the college level on somebody else's dime. That's simply one more box checked off before you have to evaluate them.

Seems reasonable. Any examples? So far I wouldn't know NIL is a thing just by looking at players on the field. The games seem as good as ever.
