So getting five star recruits is critical

That was once true but no longer is. that team is built on the portal transfer window. So he takes kids that were undervalued coming out of high school, perform well in their early years in college, and NILs them over to Indiana (which is what a lot of teams are doing now, as well). In the old days, a five star meant that they were a can't miss player and four stars meant almost can't miss. Five+ years ago, players and universities were stuck with eachother. So having high stars was important. Today, not so much.

I recall two years ago a stat that said 75% of starting QBs in the power five were transfers. Big universities today are no longer developing QBs but buying them.

Thus the need for a GM. May end up being more important than the head coach.

Was reminiscing about the 1986 team. Conlan, Bauer, Giftopoulos, Isom, Shaffer, Dozier, Manoa, etc. It got an overpowering win in Tuscaloosa and toughed it out in South Bend. Vinny then got happy feet and Irvin got alligator arms in Tempe. Tough "fighters" as Bill O'Brien might have called that group.
The program going forward must pursue individuals who are absolutely pumped playing the game, have the backs of their teammates, love winning, and love the work that it takes to win. They may not exist in the same form today as in the past, but they've got to be there.
