Wow...LSU taking Brian Kelly to court in sleazy bid to get out of paying him contracted buyout

The university is now claiming that Kelly was never officially terminated but will now be fired "for cause," which will negate the $54 million buyout.

From the ESPN story:

>>Kelly's contract with LSU includes a "for-cause" termination clause that allows for his firing due to "material and substantial [NCAA] rule violations"; being convicted of a felony or "any crime involving gambling, drugs, or alcohol"; or "engaging in serious misconduct which either displays a continual, serious disrespect ... for the mission of LSU" or "constitutes moral turpitude."<<

Congratulations, LSU, on a mindboggling achievement: making Brian Kelly look like a sympathetic character. That's pretty hard to do.

These are the institutions where young, impressionable minds are molded.

I've mentioned before that north and south don't mix. Southerners, much less coaches never go north (ever see a MS, AL, or LA license plate in PA?) and northern/non-southern coaches taking HC jobs in any confederate state will be under close scrutiny. For example, there will always be donors and alumni waiting for Elko to mess up because he ain't a Texan ("God bless the great state of Texas"), and especially that he's from New Jersey.

On the topic of that North-South thing, there was an amusing piece from an Alabama writer today calling the Big-10 a fraud and a "flimsy con artist masquerading in a muscle suit."

Funny stuff.

I have to admit that the SEC is considerably deeper than the Big-10 this year especially now that our program has imploded:

The result of an insecure culture IMO. They need to constantly reaffirmed their existence with loud in-public conversations limited to HS & college football, bass fishing, and arguing over who makes the best brisket. 😄 Although New Yorkers can be like that too. On the other hand, PA and AZ are chill. Diverse, beautiful states where it's naturally understood.

I wonder if LSU knows something we don't know. Could there be more to Kelly being let go than wins and losses?

I don't think the B1G is weaker this year than last. Certainly, PSU isn't as goo,d but you've got a lot of good B1G teams this year: tOSU, Indiana, USC, Michigan, Oregon.

If true, this just severely reduced the amount of “good” coaches desiring this job. —Presumably, “they ain’t stupid”

This should make any potential future LSU coach think twice about things

On the face of things, it seems like a pretty sleazy move on the university's part. I mean, they fired the guy after they got trounced by Texas A&M and put out a statement they were doing it because Kelly had failed to produce the results on the field that LSU expected and their fans deserved.

Now a couple weeks later they suddenly say, oh, he wasn't really fired at the time. This appears to be gaslighting taken to a very high level. I agree with the posters here who are commenting that something like this might give candidates for the job serious pause.

maybe. Or maybe they found out some stuff after he was gone that was hidden while he was there.

They were offering him $30 million as a lump sum. Which is dumb, considering he has a duty to mitigate and should land somewhere. An article I saw said they're trying to say he wasn't terminated because the AD didn't have the authority to do so, even though the board signed off on it.

As if they're trying to say: you weren't really fired, but since you didn't coach the next week and game, now you're fired for cause, and now we owe you nothing. Nice try. Governors (and Presidents) should stay out of college football.

I saw the same reports and was going to post them here before noting that you had done so.

To say the university is on thin legal ice would be an understatement. These claims don't pass the Giggle Test...though I doubt Kelly is laughing.

Candidates for the coaching position are hereby put on notice that the school believes it's under no obligation to honor the terms of its contract with you. And in the end, they're going to lose to Kelly in court anyway. Unbelievable.
