Crazy, Syracuse lands a 5 star WR

It's depressing to see PSU fall behind Michigan who is on probation and could face other penalties. It's equally depressing to see PSU only 5 spots ahead of Syracuse.
I agree with you, but Syracuse's offense is pass happy and with the success they had last season it's no wonder why a top WR would strongly consider the opportunity to put up the big numbers that attract NFL interest.

I've never understood why Michigan can do so well recruiting against PSU in NJ and the new england states.

Yes but it's Syracuse. PSU's stadium, practice facilities, and recent history of putting WRs in the NFL (Hamler, Dotson, Godwin, Robinson). I think PSU also has more $$$ to offer unless Syracuse is throwing all of their money at just a couple of players.

The other thing it could be is the position coach. Sometimes a player just falls in love with a particular position coach. Every 17 year old has their own priorities. I couldn't figure out my own son's priorities totally so trying to figure out other kids priorites seems like an excercise in futility.....

And then they lose an important defender....College football has changed. People are going to have to catch up. Being a five-star and getting a bonus from Syracuse may or may not be best in your long-term future. Especially if they don't have the assets to retain top talent for four years of eligibility.

1. How is he entering the portal now?
2. Why is he important? Was he an expected starter? I don't know their roster enough to judge, but stats alone along with the RS says they liked him, but he didn't impress enough to break through.

All good questions. The portal opens up for kids who are not on, or where not going to be, on the 105-player roster. This can be because of discipline, injury or whatever. I suspect a player can go to a team and say "peace out, take me off the 105 and everyone is happy, keep me on and you wasted a spot." I don't know this kid's situation, specifically, other than he had good offers and was a high 3-star recruit. He had visits to FL, FSU, Miami to name a few. And he's got good edge size for his age. I think he'd be a RS FR of Soph.

The consensus on the Syracuse boards is that he was a good kid, immature, in the doghouse in the early part of the season, was unfocused, this was rumored for several weeks, went home and stayed home. They felt he does have potential and is athletic. Most likely was a mutual parting of the ways.
