Hope he does well.
He was definitely exposed senior year but this setting of throwing at the combine is going to be good for him I think. It should play to his strengths. Some team might get enamored with the arm strength and grab him earlier thinking that they can undo the Franklin factor. The latest projection I saw had him going in the 4th round...#7 in the QB rankings...so he could help himself at the combine.
The ironic thing is if he'd gone into the draft after the 2024 season, he'd have been a considerably higher pick than is likely to be the case in this year's draft. 20-20 hindsight and all.
I don't know if he was exposed or not. He threw a pick against Oregon (but also had 2 4th quarter TDs to take the game to overtime), and he couldn't beat UCLA and Northwestern himself when the rest of the team and coaching staff seemed to not show up. He was still out there trying his best. He wasn't the one refusing to give Kaytron reps when it was obvious Singleton wasn't getting it done, and I doubt he was the reason we weren't throwing more passes vertically. I put 80 percent of the blame for any struggles Allar had on Franklin. Even the 20 percent I put on Allar is in part because Franklin messed with his mind so much that Allar lost confidence. He was definitely exposed senior year but this setting of throwing at the combine is going to be good for him I think. I'm in agreement with a lot of that. Drew kept fighting and I don't blame him for his lack of success last year. I do agree 80% was Franklin. I'm just saying that his performance fell off this year. Completion % stayed similar but average yds per completion dropped off a good bit and the QB rating dropped. He needed to take a step forward, but it appears to have been a step back. I hope he does well. He is a true Penn Stater in my eyes. I just think the team that takes him has to believe that they can fix him. Because Franklin definitely screwed up his development IMO.I don't know if he was exposed or not. I think the main issue is that he wasn't put in a position to succeed. I read an article in The Athletic about Mendoza. I did not realize that Cignetti's last 4 starting QBs at JMU were players of the year in their league. Kurtis Rourke, in his only year at IU, was the 2nd-team All Big Ten QB behind Dillon Gabriel. Then you have Mendoza. That is an enviable track record of QB development. Contrast that with Franklin, who effectively ruined 2 5-star QBs (Hackenberg and Allar). He also ran off some good NFL prospects, like Tommy Stevens and Will Levis. McSorley and Clifford did catch on as NFL backups. McSorley was the only All Big-Ten QB (2nd and 3rd team) Franklin had in 12 seasons. Cignetti has had 2 in 2 years. And, both were in their first year in the league.I'm in agreement with a lot of that. Drew kept fighting and I don't blame him for his lack of success last year. I do agree 80% was Franklin. That seems fair. Some draft analysts have really turned on him. He should for sure be in the Top 5 of the QBs this year. I see Ben Roethlisberger and Josh Allen as comparables. He's probably a little smaller and niftier than Ben was, and not as good of a runner as Josh Allen. But he can make all the throws and he has decent pocket presence and doesn't get sacked much. People have knocked his processing speed and acted like he's a turnover machine. He threw his first 311 passes without a pick.Mel Kiper has his as the 3rd best QB in the draft

His biggest issue is overthinking IMO and that is 100% Franklin. The kid tore up WVU his first season like a gunslinger. Making plays even throwing late over the middle. Franklin told him to check it down and he did. But Franklin has been in his head way too much his whole college career. If he gets himself in a situation with a competent coaching staff willing to develop him, he could be great. But he has a lot to let go of right now IMO. Franklin nearly Hackenberged him. I will be interested to see if Grunkemeyer regresses due to the Franklin effect or if Franklin coaches him differently. I feel like the #1 QB thing was a problem - Franklin felt pressure not to mess it up and maybe put too much pressure on Drew as a result. His biggest issue is overthinking IMO and that is 100% Franklin. He'll match up a barely mobile QB to an RPO offensive scheme. BGJ is a people skills guy and not a systems thinker.I will be interested to see if Grunkemeyer regresses due to the Franklin effect or if Franklin coaches him differently. I think our WRs were awful during Allar's tenure. The TEs were great. We underutilized the RBs in the passing game. I liked our O a lot in his Jr. year but the offensive scheme seems completely off his Sr. year. Not only for him but the running game as well. It got better after CJF was let go and Allar injured. What rings in my ears was the answer to the question to Smith "why the better success in the long passing game?" Terry took a long pause and said "We called the plays." (or something close) My take away was that the deep passing attack was purposeful and part of the plan whereas before, it was not. That is hard to fathom given Allar has the best passing arm we've had since 1994.I will be interested to see if Grunkemeyer regresses due to the Franklin effect or if Franklin coaches him differently. I think Grunk is a more capable QB in the RPO type of offense. At 6-2 and 203 he is quite different than the 6-5, 240 Allar.
Lastly, and I know I posted this before, I had a one-on-one lunch this time last year with someone very well connected to the Steelers. At the time, Allar was considered a first round talent. This person said that he was told Allar would last past the Steelers #1 pick this year. In other words, if he wasn't picked before, the Steelers would take him. I spoke to this same person two weeks ago in a short call (before everyone joined into the Zoom) and he said that a lot depended on the combine and NFL scout day at PSU. However, he thought Allar is considered a smidge below a first round pick. He said that his injury and lack of team performance now made him more of a risk or project. He also said that Howard has surprised the Steelers and they may no longer invest a high draft pick for a QB
