Florida International University at #2 Penn State (12:00 EDT, BTN)

A shutout is always good but FIU converted too many 3rd and 4th downs.

Allar only completed 57% of his passes vs an FCS team. How's he going to do vs the big boys?

This was only a 20-0 game with 3+ minutes to play. Closer than the score indicated.

Not really. We controlled the game. They couldn't score. We couldn't score efficiently early. Self inflicted wounds. Probably the opposite. Game wasn't as close as the score indicated.
I don't know. Score indicates an uncompetitive blow out. I think they were pretty competitive most of the game.

Well the D lived up to its billing and the #2 team ranking.

The O showed flashes but we're going to need a lot more consistent production from them once we get through the walkover portion of our schedule. And it starts with Drew.

As it is, the 34 points is a little deceiving as 7 came off the nice run by Kaytron in clean-up time and 7 more as a result of a turnover on D.

Really nice game from Luke Reynolds and a spectacular catch by Devonte Ross in the end zone.

The problem with games like this against the likes of FIU is that it's hard to take much out of them. But I love the way our D has played. I said coming into the season that the key to competing for a championship would be Drew. I've seen nothing to change that opinion.

Yeah, I think we played our C or D game and still came out looking like a blow out. I also think FIU may be a little better than expected. We have a lot to work on and a lot of untapped potential. Let's hope we show signs of putting it together next week.

Work and work more on converting 3rd and 4th and shorts. All week. Drive the other team backwards with the RB exploding into the hole.

We weren't supposed to just control the game. We were supposed to dominate a below average team from a lower level conference. CFN predicted only 5 wins. ESPN/S&P+ had them ranked 129th in the country.

FIU had 12 possessions and only three 3 and outs. They had drives of 40, 53, 33, 28, 50, and 38 yds and could have kicked a couple of FGs.

When was the game competitive though? At what point did you bite your nails or worry that they might get a break or 2 and pull the upset?

Score indicates #2 team played like crap as a 40+ pt favorite. Offensively at least. If you feel like their defense rose to the occasion, then perhaps I could understand thinking they were competitive. I'm not talking coach-speak though. We hurt outself much more than they hurt us.

Still means we have plenty to work on.

I never said we were impressive. Lol

I wonder. Where is the improvement in Allars mechanics? He has a strong arm but is too inconsistent with his footwork, and ball location (doesn't lead receivers well).

I have to agree with you, Rick.

This is Drew's 3rd year as a starter and he's yet to show the kind of consistently dominant performance that you would hope for from a guy who arrived with his hype and ratings.

I mean, yes, he's been good on the whole...but not what you'd call elite. And let's face it, he hasn't even been good in the biggest games against the Michigans and Ohio States of the world. Some want to blame that on the coaches or the receivers but the fact remains.

All this said, he can still change the entire narrative and I hope he will. It starts on September 27...and then must continue for a bunch of games thereafter.

Yes, the coach himself emphasized that we have plenty to work on in the BTN interview right after the game.

For me, by halftime there was never a doubt we were going to win the game and I posted here in the thread that it would amaze me if FIU managed to get 10 points.

In fact, I actually saw some things to take encouragement from...even though I had hoped for something more impressive from the offense.

Still, in the end, it's a 34-point shutout. Yet I come away from it with the same concerns that I previously expressed here about playing 3 cupcakes in a row before the big game on September 27.

Spot on. The defense is better than expected this early, even if they have some warts to clear up. Offense is meh. We expected more early on, returning the players we did.
