BYW, unranked UVA is currently beating #8 FSU.
You are exactly right. The theme is we do not make plays in winning time and the other team always does. There was also the Oregon TD pass in the 2nd OT where Moore just side steps DDS who is barrelling in for a clean shot but not under control and doesn't make the play. A perfect example. This is unexplainable and uncanny. You would think the law of averages would fall in our favor one of these times but it is not random luck. We are not ready for these moments. It has to be mental as well as physical. I think everyone feels the pressure starting with Franklin and that impacts our ability to execute in these clutch moments. Here's the thing. PSU plays OSU, Oregon, ND, etc tough. Who can forget blowing big Q4 leads only to lose to OSU by a single point in back to back years. I don't know how people can think we don't have enough talent to win a few of those games if we had enough talent to be winning those games late in Q4.
I'm not saying we have as much talent as those teams. I'm saying that something's wrong if we continue to fold under pressure. Somebody has to make a play. We've talked about Allar enough but we also had a chance to keep Oregon out of the end zone in the 1st OT. Moore fumbled once but we don't fall on it. Harris tipped a ball that turned into a completion instead of an INT. Last year vs OSU Wallace had a TD pass taken out of his hands for an INT. This team simply can't make the big play when it matters.
IMO it starts at the top.
Franklin is all about big plays. He prioritizes going for sacks and takeaways rather than sealing the edge, giving up a few yards, and forcing a punt or FG. The problem with that is opponents know it's coming and they enter the game with a plan to counter the rush. There was also the Oregon TD pass in the 2nd OT where Moore just side steps DDS who is barrelling in for a clean shot but not under control and doesn't make the play. DEs are taught to crash in nowadays, with the LBs moving to cover the edge. LBs who can't get to the edge because they don't read the play, are slow, and can't shed blocks are the problem. No disruptions. And if they dive after the carrier rather than run through them, or are juked out, or are arm tacklers, then that's makes it worse. Putting Wheatley in as LB might work cuz he's fast and can tackle.Losing containment has been a problem for many years
Exactly. No gaming by the coaches. Linear thinkers who keep doing the same thing, no matter what. Good coaches are clever coaches.Franklin is all about big plays.
