FTB Week 3 Tengwall On The OL, Singleton

What separates us from dominating and just being above average? Tengwall breaks it down:

1. OL isn't blocking who they are supposed to.
2. Singleton is jogging, not running.

What's here is very ugly at times. Donkoh doesn't appear to be 100% back, even if 100% healthy. He, Dawkins, Shelton, they seem to miss their guy at times. The quality of everyone else keeps it a positive play usually, but these missed blocks lead to the tackle.

Singleton just isn't playing at full speed. Multiple of his runs he could have broke for large gains, if not TDs, but he is just jogging like it's practice. I wonder if his jogging pace messed up the 3rd and 7 swing pass.

All in all, our guys aren't getting beat by these non-P4 players which is a huge thing. We just aren't executing. We aren't winning all of our blocks vs Oregon. We have to correct blocking the right man.

One such play that we blocked *ALMOST* correct was Kaytron's TD. Split zone from the OL (Dawkins to the Shelton is Wide zone, right side of line blocks Inside Zone). Dawkins doesn't get up to the Mike. Where he is a step slow, he doesn't get to the edge in time and Allen is 7 yards down the field.

One play we blocked perfectly, but didn't finish was a Singleton run with Allen lead blocking. Everyone blocks the right man, Nick sees the hole, but he gets into the secondary and starts stutter stepping. Turn on the jets bud! Make them catch you.

Small things.

And just hit the hole fast, going north-south. Five yards is better than one. The defenses faced in a couple of weeks will otherwise drop the RBs for losses. This ain't the Big12, Andy.
One thing that amazes in not only PSU 's rushing attack and nationwide is the elimination of pitch plays to the perimeter. Granted you see them once in awhile like on Allen s long TD but l guess l m just getting old when l yearn for the days of old when guys like KiJana Carter and Larry Johnson went student body left/right with a full head of steam to utilize their speed. Part of it may be that most teams rarely put the QB under center anymore.

It is a very tough video to watch, because it’s all true. The OL lacks technique, even the experienced guys like Dawkins who did so well last season. It is inexplicable.

This might be a reach, but wasn't there a very experienced OL coach that assisted Trautwein the last few years and I think either retired or took another job? Maybe his absence is noticeable?

When all else fails, get back to driving the two-man and five-man sleds. Ten yards at a time. 👍

Back in the 1970's, there was a moving spring-loaded blocking and tackling dummy called a tackle-matic that could be set for a couple hundred pounds of thrust. My neck still has this click in it from dealing with that thing.

I get the impression through these two games so far that Singleton is just trying to not get hurt in order to not hurt his draft status
He doesn't look like an NFL back. He is not physical enough and has poor vision. Goes down way too easily. For example, on Kaytron's TD run when Kaytron was about 10 yards down the field when their Safety comes over and gives him a good shot to the lower body. Kaytron shook it off stayed inbounds and was off to the races. If that had been Nick he would have flown 2 yards out of bounds.

Was getting the same feeling. Hope that's not true. 1) It's not good for the team and 2) often that's when you do get hurt.
VS FIU, there was a third or fourth down play where they handed off to NS who ran off the left tackle. A huge hole opened up right in front of him and he chose to follow the blockers into a scrum of players and got stopped short. Had he planted and cut, he'd have made the first down easily. I get it on first or second down but when it is a drive making or breaking play, you get the first down. Easy for me to see on my sofa in front of my TV but it was pretty shocking as it was right in front of him.

I saw the same thing. He missed an easy cut up field and pretty wide-open hole.

..and there was also a play, critical to sustaining a drive, when Allar handed the ball to the RB on a zone/read, and if he had kept the ball, it would still be running today. It was wide open for the QB. But I don't know if it was a true option or a play designed to look like an option, but it was handed off no matter what.

After watching the game last night, the performance wasn't as bad as I thought. First, FIU had some really good athletes, especially in their secondary. They also had a really good QB and RB. It always appeared that PSU was one fingertip away from a game-breaking catch, run, tackle, or interception. I came away less enthusiastic about the defense and more comfortable with the offense's performances.

I'll need to rewatch. I do recall the Allar read that probably wasn't a read. Franklin wasn't happy with him taking extra hits on a run in game 1. Pretty sure that is Franklin telling Allar not to take hits right now. That sets a tone and probably makes it tough on Allar to react with instincts when what he's being told to do is more cautious.

Said no one ever.
it is all about expectations and perceptions. Obviously, the defense is better than the offense right now and that is driving your comments. But I was just speaking about the post game comments.

The D threw a shutout but I didn't think they played all that well. They had two TD-saving tackles that would have been long gainers. FIU was able to sustain long drives that ended with zero points when they went for it on fourth down. In fact, they beat us in Time of Possession 34:17 to 25:43, even with two turnovers to our zero. So I am happy with our defense but it wasn't the stellar defense that wins natties.

On offense, we just looked out of sorts. To me, it looks like Professor Andy K is playing with his new chemical set. They are trying to get Allar and Ross into the flow while still growing Pena and Hudson. There weren't a lot of balls thrown to long-established PSU players (Dinkins, Singleton, Allen, Clifford or even Denmark). It was a practice game. The players knew it and played like it.

We've got a ton of senior players who have proven themselves on offense. The only exception is the WR transfers. They've got a long way to go before beating a team like Oregon, but most of the offensive problems were timing and reading. They've got the talent.

Agreed. We aren't seeing many Allar runs other than when he is being flushed from the pocket.
