Totally agree: there are no "villains." Indeed, we don't know what Matt said or didn't say but it's hard to believe that he didn't at least offer assurances of a fair competition for the starting job.
That said, the reality is this creates an unfortunate situation where if things don't pan out with Rocco while Grunk goes down to Blacksburg and shines right out of the gate, Matt is going to be 2nd-guessed big-time.
That's just the nature of the beast. Everyone's in it for the money now. The players. The coaches. And they're doing very well for themselves, especially the coaches at a big-time program like Penn State.
The flip side of that equation is that when you screw up...or even when you make a reasonable decision that ends up not working out...you're going to come in for criticism and 2nd-guessing. This doesn't make you a villain except in the minds of idiots. It just makes you a guy who made the wrong call. (You want villains, look at Lane Kiffin who is now playing games with the Ole Miss assistant coaches who'll be joining him in Baton Rouge.)
Personally, I can't remember ever watching Rocco play a down but based on what I saw from Grunk over the last several games of this season, culminating in his sterling performance in the bowl, I'd have preferred him to be the presumptive starter next year. Just one fan's opinion...one fan who's hoping he's judged this wrongly.
