Tengwall hits on this early. Many, if not most DBs run 4.3s to 4.5s in the forty just like WRs, then how do the best receivers consistently get separation? The answer used to be taught in the 60s & 70s, but it is best illustrated in modern times by basketball players with great handles quickly getting by their defender when driving with the ball. They dribble directly at the defender to within a foot or two to get him on his heels, then they head and shoulder fake one way before cutting the other way, maybe using a jab step and crossover. The idea is to get the defender's hips moving one way while cutting the other way.

Never understand why RB's in the open field, as well as kick returners that get to the open field, don't run right at that last man and put a quick move on the defender to make the defender more so guess on his final direction. It would seem to give the ball carrier a 50-50 chance to get by. But too many just veer to the sideling and get tackled or pushed OOB's....

Exactly. Run AT the defender. It's almost a fundamental technique that should be coached at the JV level.

Ross was completely covered on the long post. He never ran AT the defender. He tried to run by him with no fake. The defender just ran with him the entire way. Kotelnicki and Hagans, fire them both. They don't understand the details of the positions they coach.
