Looks like some good betting races today. I’ll try to post a few
First races I ever saw were at pocono downs. Lots of good memories there and still remember my favorite trotter named Street Fiddler. My Dad and grandfather were big fans of harness racing. They and their buddies went to Pocono Downs outside Scranton or Monticello in New York state at least once a week...often twice...during the summer.
I sort of grew up on that and so followed the trotters myself as a college kid and for a few years after getting married. In all that time, the most I ever won on a single evening was $75. Never broke $100. In fact, if I won enough to cover the cost of the program and snacks, I was happy.
I haven't been back to the track in 30 years but still have fond memories of warm summer evenings at Pocono Downs.
I remember kneeling for a decade of the family rosary, demanded by Mom before Dad left for the track...and one evening his improvised prayer: "Bless this horse, oh Lord I pray...make him win and make him pay." Mom was none too pleased by Dad's lack of reverence.
There’s lot of racing before that so too early for me. Big race at Saratoga this weekend the Whitney which features good older horses including Fierceness. The field this year should be excellent for the classic.Kind of early, but who are people liking for the Breeder's Cup Classic? I'm thinking we may be seeing the second coming of Curlin. Journalism was the only horse to run all 3 races (finishing 2-1-2 vs. Curlin's 3-1-2). Journalism labored a bit in the Haskell to win in 1:48.15 and punch his ticket to the Classic. Curlin was 3rd in the Haskell, never really challenging. But he was dominant in the later part of the year after a bit of a break. Sovereignty is the favorite right now with two wins over Journalism and his win in the Jim Dandy, but if I bet anything (I usually don't), I'm putting money on Journalism.
