I suggest watching today's Press Conference if you have a chance

Couldn't buy out Franklin because PSU can't afford it, yet here we are. And Kraft stated that the program and the coach going forward will be aggressive in nabbing the talent to win championships. I'm speculating that an operation the size and reach of PSU has the resources to do what it wants. And keep in mind that all that Texas oil money won Hook'em and Gig'em just one natty between them since 1970. And that one in '69 was a gift from **** Nixon.
Being able to afford it might depend on their ability to mitigate the payout.

My view is the Cael of coaching is Kalen DeBoer. But we stole a coach from ISU before. I wonder what Matt Campbell could do with more resources?
There would have been no logical reason to fire Franklin unless PSU and the key backers are prepared to go all the way with resources that include the NIL to both go after both top high school and portal talent.

But then again, the backers that were behind Franklin's firing did not give him the resources to actually go after the 5 star high school players and the top portal players, so I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm not defending Franklin's game day coaching which had glaring weaknesses, but he was not given the total NIL to go after all the talent to match up with OH St, UGA, Bama, USC, TAM and some others.....

But he had plenty of NIL to beat UCLA & NW.

Who are the key backers besides West Shore Homes & Addidas?

I'm guessing a lot of alums who own insurance agencies, law firms, HVAC distributorships, fast food franchises, logistics operations, healthcare practices, construction and engineering firms, commercial real estate, car dealerships, importers, etc. Monies can be pooled from those multi-millionaire alums or friends of the program.
And they're at all schools. Somebody's gotta own or lease all those business jets I see flying in and out of Scottsdale Airport all day.

I was trying to make a point with my question. I don't think there's any way that Kraft or the BOT met will all of these people before deciding to fire Franklin. At best they heard rumblings from some donors. IMO the only two with that power would be Addidas and West Shore and to be honest it's probably only Addidas. Their deal was $300 million over 10 years which is $30 million per year. Westshore's deal was $50 million over 15 years which is $3.3 million per year.

I'd be surprised if Addidas is paying for Franklin's buyout but their $30 million per year is certainly enough to give them a say. Not so much the insurance, law, and HVAC guys who contribute $100k other than indirectly through their rumblings.

I guess my point is that the "Phil Knight, Texas Oil Tycoons will always win because schools like Penn State don't have that kind money" mantra is somehow a red herring, false, or diversionary thing that's just thrown out there. The school/alums have a lot of money. Some of the gifts donated to academic departments, research, and facilities from private individuals are surprising.

I agree that PSU has a lot of resources by virtue of it's size. Probably top 15 in terms of resources. Just not as many resources as Oregon or Texas. There are 10 Fortune 1000 companies located in Columbus. Zero are located in State College. That's pretty difficult to overcome.

I think big donors had grown tired of Franklin and his constant losing of big games all the while clamoring for more. I think with the fresh energy of a new coach the NIL donations could increase.

I believe the NIL plan going forward was talked through by those with the $ as part of the overall plan to replace Franklin and attract the new coach with the resources needed to compete with the top programs Franklin couldn't beat. Not that that leaves Franklin off the hook for some of those losses over the last few years as at times he did have equal talent, and a few times better talent.
