Franklin ran him out of town because he didn't believe Wallace could take him to the playoffs. Only had 9 catches for 156 yards and a TD vs Georga. Might have been better to give him a raise and leave Hudson at USC and Ross where ever he was........But it's effective. Doesn't look like Trey Wallace was the problem receiver we made him out to be, after all.
Somebody needs to write a mini-book on what happened here. KLS left and seemed to do well at Auburn, but many of us wrote it off. You can't write this off. Wallace is back in the semi-final again, while PSU fell off a cliff despite "upgrading" at receiver. Who was the problem? Franklin, Allar, Hagans, Kotelnicki? All of the above?Franklin ran him out of town because he didn't believe Wallace could take him to the playoffs. Only had 9 catches for 156 yards and a TD vs Georga. Wallace is a first team punt returner as well for Ole Miss. But then again it took Franklin 4 years to put Daequan Hardy back to return a punt and he took the first one to the house.....

But why have the receivers been successful elsewhere? And why did receivers who had success elsewhere not experience it here until the head coach was fired, the starting QB was out for the year, and the interim finally had to put his foot down that we were going to throw vertical routes? I think we all thought a 5-star QB could elevate receivers by being able to make throws that others couldn't make. Instead, we were led to believe we needed 5-star receivers as well. I suspect Franklin was the reason things didn't really work. He publicly cringed at letting a 5-star QB with a huge arm actually use it to throw downfield, turning him into a game manager who was afraid to make a mistake. A number of careers were impacted negatively by whatever mental chains apparently gripped James Franklin. Franklin himself was forced to drop to a lower-tier league. I'm surprised that Hagans has a job so fast. Allar will be lucky to go before the 3rd round I feel, when he should have been a sure-fire first-round pick. Kotelniciki was being considered for head jobs after last season. Now he'll probably have to go into reputation rehab mode. Several receivers had to go elsewhere to maximize their potential. It's hard to be critical of Franklin's talent evaluation as he pretty consistently was in early or high talent in PSU's base recruiting area, but for some reason his WR's have not worked out at a high percentage the last 4 or 5 years. Before that, ARob, Godwin, Blacknall, and some others.
You seemed to have answered your own question. But Question: Why have the receivers been successful elsewhere? Allar was better in his first start against WVU where he was a gunslinger than he was as a SR. Why? Franklin ruined him like Franklin ruined Hackenberg. Franklin gets in their heads and makes them overthink it. Drew pretty much said as much.Allar is a pocket passer who gets a C for reading the situation, a C for throw timing, a B for accuracy, and a C- for mobility.
Kotelnicki is a Big12-style play designer and play caller. He injects his clever stuff in the wrong situations, and even the execution of it fails much of the time. Warren even had to pull an under-thrown ball off the USC DB's helmet for a TD last year for one of the few successes.
I'm not sure if Hagens closely studied videos of say a Jeremiah Smith or researched best receiver separation practices, but he's probably a guy who just has his receivers practicing routes.
Franklin was a front man and a relationships guy. He didn't recognize that championship teams operate as a well-meshed machine where all parts like WR, QB, LB, DL must be fundamentally sound.
The simplified game management that Terry Smith employed and his allowing the players to "play", especially Grunk, and just using the best guys (e.g. Allen) and the best plays (e.g. pitch sweep), were minor tweaks that weren't in Franklin's repertoire.
HAGANS. The WR room was much better b4 him. I see h e landed a new job. That is a head scratcher.Somebody needs to write a mini-book on what happened here. Yep, AK put all his eggs in the Tyler Warren basket, last year and could not shift gears till Terry made him do it when it was too late. But it's effective. Doesn't look like Trey Wallace was the problem receiver we made him out to be, after all.
