Kotelnicki

I thought his play calling and clock mgmt was awful down to the 2minute mark in the first half. I thought OSU would score but their fumble saved us. Then I thought his play calls were great to get the TD before the half. Had some runs to take time off the clock and did a nice job getting Allen the ball.

I kinda feel the same about him as I did with Yurcich. There seems to be no identity with this offense. It’s constantly a mixed bag. Although it is better with Allen getting more touches.

Is he gone yet? If not, did Terry Smith tell him to stop with stupid plays and other drive killers.
IMHO, pitches to Allen/Singleton and play action, drop back passes should be 70% of the plays with an occasional shuffle or swing pass.

Just an FYI for clarity: the correct term is "shovel pass."

Found this out of hundreds of online opinions...
"Palm up when passing = shovel, like the tool; Palm down when passing = shuffle, like the throwing action in shuffleboard; I have no idea if this is true but I just wanted to point out the ridiculousness of using “it mimics shoveling dirt" as an argument."
This goes back maybe to the 70's when it was referred to as a shuffle where the QB stepped forward and pushed the ball to the receiver. And because the ball is not "shovelled", I'm sticking with the original term.

"A short sliding step or movement, or a walk characterized by such steps." I think the term evolved to shovel because announcers and fans didn't know what a shuffle was. Shoulda just called it a "push pass".

As someone who’s coached football, I believe every coach that I’ve worked with or gone to a clinic to hear speak calls it a shovel pass. My guess is that voice to text does not know the difference and thus the spelling that popped up.

His playcalling is so bad it is as if he is trying to eff up.
The toss sweep works. They should run it 20 times against Indy using some formation variations. Remove the "we must have explosive plays" nonsense from the vocabulary and just play to win. Getting at least ten yards in three plays is not too much to ask.

The toss sweep is a successful big boy football play and AK only likes BS playground football plays that make him look “smart.” Worst PSU football coach or coordinator we have had ever had at PSU. Second worst goes to Hagans.

Franklin always talked about explosive plays. To have explosive plays, you need explosive players...like Barkley or Warren. They made explosive plays out of a normal play. My understanding is that Franklin would make "suggestions" to game plans, which altered the way plays were made, as well as personnel. That's why coordinators didn't last very long. Franklin isn't here. I would think Kotelnicki has a freer hand at calling plays.

What it seems to me is that the explosive plays has been interpreted to mean a trick play. The problem with trick plays is they take too long to set up, and the defense is playing so tight that they easily get snuffed out. I had to scratch my head as to why Clifford was put in as the alternating QB. He's not an explosive player and hasn't really shown any consistent bright spots.

I appreciate your clarifying the term. I certainly didn't mean to sound pedantic; I should have just kept my old fingers shut. Never too old to learn.

I've worked with a bunch of old PA Dutchmen that would call a shovel a shuffle. I guess that's why they're not sports broadcasters.
Was this with a track gang at the RR?
Many years ago, my neighbor, Jeff, worked on a RR track gang in Lebanon County with some older PA Dutch gents who called him Cheffy. They must've used picks and shuffles.
