Let's look at the bright side: we could still make the playoffs

Allow me to interrupt the wails of despair and fury with a chirpy little note of hope: our playoff aspirations have a weak pulse but are still alive.

We just need to win out, which would include beating Ohio State at the Shoe. Eezy-peezy, friends!

OK OK, I'm grasping at straws here but still...

After yesterday's ponking, I have little faith in Franklin.

Do you see yesterday's defense stopping OSU, Indiana or any decent offense.

It's hard to see that happening...but anything's possible. Just looking for a reason not to give up on the season.

We get Indiana at home the week after Ohio State at the Shoe. And of course before that we have to deal with Iowa at Kinnick.

ESPN's updated computer odds give us a 1.5% chance to make the playoffs which sounds about right.

I'll tell you this, if (when) we lose a 3rd game, things could get even uglier as NFL-draftable players bail. Then again, Drew may have an incentive to see the season through because so far I think he's played his way down to the 3rd round or lower.

We need to win out to have even a chance...and then have some things break our way in the form of upsets elsewhere.

Texas came into the season with great expectations and has laid almost as big an egg as we have. One difference is that their super-hyped QB hadn't actually played a lot whereas our super-hyped QB was in his 3rd year as a starter.

Another difference is that Texas has 4 current top-20 teams left on their schedule (3 of them top-10) whereas we have 2. The point being, they still have at least a chance to prove some things and rise in the rankings in the process.

Coming into the season, most of us took a loss in Columbus for granted but calculated this would not torpedo our chances if we took care of business with the rest of the schedule. Now it's do or die in Columbus.

But before anything else comes the small matter of Northwestern on Saturday. I mean, at this point why wouldn't AK just say screw it and open things up. Chuck the ball downfield. Give Kaytron 20 carries. What have we got to lose? Except AK, who arrived at Penn State with the reputation of an offensive wizard, just keeps doing the same failed things over and over. It really makes you wonder...
