New football coach gets huge break

We do not play OSU the next 2 years. This eliminates 2 sure loses. If he beats the teams that we have more talent than and splits even with the rest, 9+ wins is doable.
He will have a Michael Mauti moment this winter as players decide to stay or portal.

New HC, New OC, build the trenches.

I was really hoping Terry Smith would try to leave his mark on this team for the remainder of the year. Show a little something different, maybe some power or under the center formations. Even if he doesn't have all the personnel, give Kraft something to think about and evaluate. I want him to succeed, but he needs to show he's different than Franklin. Instead there has been no new innovation. Why would Kraft hire someone just like the guy he fired? That's essentially what Smith is offering up.

I felt like this game was a great opportunity for the interim HC to become a viable candidate. The second half collapse kind of killed that. Having said that, this team has two major problems:

  1. 1) Weak up the middle. We can't stop the run. As a result, we have to compensate by filling with safeties and that results in single coverage on the wideouts. With tOSU, who has no weaknesses, they just take what they are given. If our S plays pass defense, they run the ball. If they play run defense, they pass.
  2. 2) On offense, our WRs are nonexistent. I don't know if it is the scheme or players, but we've now gone through two QBs that can't seem to hit a WR and/or take a sack. We hit some passes to them yesterday but most were short. I think our total yardage to WRs was under 60. It is unfair to compare to tOSU with, perhaps, the best WR corps ever to play college ball, but they had ~300 yards. The result is that the S can play up close to the line to stop the run and/or cover on short passes.
