Nice open job interview by Franklin.

He said all he should have. None of DHS the shouldn’t have. Never discussed NIL or the portal. Or internal issues.

Didn’t dump on the old boss…..which would be a red flag for any new boss.

And Saban……screw you!🤬

Saban said what Franklin wanted to say but couldn't.

Franklin also left no doubt that he'll be coaching again...and soon...like next year for sure.

I have to wonder whether he'll be taking some of our players with him.

There was never any chance that he was going to dump on Penn State in this interview but at the same time he definitely didn't do the program any favors with what he said...and what he didn't say.

Good luck to him moving forward. He did an awful lot of good things at Penn State but he was clearly played out and was not going to get the team over the hump to his desired "elite" status.

Saban said it was "unfair as hell" to fire Franklin. What I think he really meant is he's worried that PSU may get a coach capable of beating the Alabamas and Georgias of the world now.

+1 on this. I love how everyone ignores the context that Franklin tried going over his bosses head this summer re: an extension. That's never a good thing/look. Any future AD's out there would be wise to take that into consideration before hiring him.

The guy just never seems to take real accountability or ownership of his failures. Something obviously wasn't going right b/c after a peak in 2016 there was a long slow decline (see lack of wins against peer teams). He sucked as a gameday coach and from day 1 could never even do basic clock management. He seemed more worried about being friends with the players than doing what was best for the team which is be fair but demand respect by holding himself and the players accountable when they don't do things right. There was always some excuse, not enough $$$, we had to travel, or some other bs as if his was the only team that had to play away games. Really mind blowing the excuses he'd trout out there.

*Franklin never came up big in the biggest games and too large of a sample to say it was random.
*Going over his boss's head despite not being able to achieve basic milestones.
*Lost the trust of the team
*Not an elite judge of talent or an elite recruiter.

The program is bigger than a personality. Not much more to say.

I believe he said he's "a player's coach", where as his bosses and the fans are expecting him to be a results coach. As in doing whatever he can to win games regardless of which players he has to play to do it.

Franklin over his tenure had a number of occassions where he seemed to play the more senior players when it sure seemed like the team would have had a better chance to win with a younger player getting more game reps.

I believe this is the case with Franklin giving Singleton the carries he has gotten this season, when Allen was averaging almost twice the ypc that Singleton was yet got far fewer carries in some games.

I also believe it's the reason that by and large the 3 transfer WR's and Clifford have gotten basically all reps at WR so far this season.

There have been examples of younger players getting a chance and making good on it, for example Reynolds at TE last year and this season. But I don't believe Franklin always uses the players that would give the team the best chance to win due to his allegence to upper classmen players.

We hear that term "player's coach" a lot and it's usually used in a complimentary way.

But sometimes "player's coaches" end up letting the inmates run the asylum.

It's good to be able to connect with players but not at the expense of team cohesion and discipline.

Nobody ever called Vince Lombardi a player's coach but when all was said and done, his players said he was the best thing to ever happen to them.

Somebody has to be in charge of a football team and if that somebody is doing his job, there are times when he will not be liked, which is OK...hell, it's necessary...as long as he is consistent and fair as all great coaches are.

Agree that Saban said what Franklin couldn’t, but also ( IMO) said what he truly believed……and this mirrors a very large majority of the country , as they have a 40,000 foot view and don't live in the Penn State bubble. —At least part of this is bad optics for PSU, and can ( probably will) effect/limit desirable applicants for the next hire. —Also agree with: good luck to him moving forward . Confident he’ll succeed at another school if that’s what he chooses to do.

This was disgusting!! Has a recently fired coach ever been given a platform like this to play the "woe is me" card? I am in absolute shock. They focused on how this effects his family? Really?

Saban would not put up with any of what happened at PSU.... excuses... record against to 10, players celebrating over average plays, lack of discipline, lack of execution, details... all of it.... Saban can say all he wants (and I like Saban) but he would not put up with any of the crap at PSU under Franklin..

Im not calling you out... Just saying..

Agree that Saban is much more of an old school disciplinarian and tolerates little showman BS. But coaches are very different in how they approach/interact with the players. Just look at Saban’s coaching tree. Many good coaches there ( Ole Miss, Miami, Georgia etc), and each vary in how much extracurricular showmanship they tolerate….from little to a lot. This may be generational, ( all are successful ) but I generally prefer Saban’s way.
—I 100% agree on the execution aspect. It is inexplicable to me that virtually the same team that won 13 games ten months ago, can’t run the ball or convert a 3rd down. Either the players themselves were too comfortable with their financial set up and were happy to give 80% instead of of 100%, or the new influx of players/coaches caused a “chemistry issue “. It’s a mystery
