Good question. He beat out a kid that was the punter all of last year. Riley Thompson was a good, not great but good, punter all of last year. According to the PSU webste:

Currently holds a 44.2 punt average as a Nittany Lion, ranking third all-time at Penn State. Notable: Owns 60 career punts landing inside the 20-yard line and 20 inside the 10-yard line...Has just eight touchbacks in 157 career punts and 36 career kicks of 50+ yards.

I hope he doesn't have to chase down a punt returner because he's not catching anybody at nearly 300 lbs.

Noticed that too. But coaches change alignment of punting team. And can have players hold their blocks a bit longer. Keep a back back to pick up rushers.
