Paul Finebaum and Humble Pie

Yes, we now see how fraudulent were the CFP committee's antics surrounding its playoff selection of 3-loss Alabama, which got wiped out by Georgia in their CCG but didn't drop one single notch in the final ranking because...SEC!!!

Basically, when cheating became legal and available to everyone...when everyone got to play by the same rules and you could bring the money in by the front door instead of the back...the myth of SEC superiority was exposed.

Bias in rankings goes back nearly 60 years. The common argument back then was that PSU played "eastern" football which was inferior to the SWC and Big8 conference schedules. There is a poster from the old board that still argues in a passive aggressive manner that PSU (Paterno) does not get credit for the great teams of the 60's, 70's and 80's because of "inferior non-conference type schedules".

In 1986, I was staying in Birmingham the night before driving over to Tuscaloosa for the PSU-Bama game. A young Paul Finebaum was doing his local sports radio show from a sports bar that I was patronizing when a business associate and Bama guy I was bar hopping with points me out to Paul. This led to an on-air one-way "discussion" about how Cornelius Bennett was going to decimate a slow, overrated Penn State offense.
Well, the next day, Trey Bauer, Shane Conlin, Tim Manoa, and DJ Dozier did the decimating. Bama didn't even get a TD. It was one of those perfect weekends. And Paul and I haven't spoken since. 🙂

Good piece in Outkick that basically makes the exact point as mine in post #3 above:

Everyone knows the legend of the SEC bagmen to be true. NIL certainly leveled HS recruitment and took away depth from the top programs, but what is not mentioned is the transfer portal. Free agency has crushed depth as every backup has the opportunity to search for a place to start.
