PSU vs Nevada game thread

Halftime "analysts" giving PSU lots of hype. Might want to wait and see if all this works against quality opponent first....

Bama getting beat by FL St. Would be nice to see Bama not make the playoff again this season.....

They hired some flash in the pan coach. And paid him a lot.

the offense seems to have a whole new look. Quick off the snap, moving instead of stationary, little time between snaps, just a fresh look. And great defense players out there, smart and fast.
We are…

Bama was giving out NIL before it was legal. No portal either. They oversigned recruits every cycle and medically retired many who couldn't crack the 2 deep.

Saban got out wisely with his legend in tact.

Not sure if you've been to Alabama lately.

There is no deep south.

Also, Saban was from mostly up north.
🤔
Been there very lately. Owned a home in Appalachia NC (Highlands) about halfway between ATL and Asheville. A few halfbacks and other yankees but mostly locals. There is most definitely, unequivocally a deep south. The culture is thick. Not sure how you experienced anything different.

A GT engineer neighbor still curses Gen. Sherman.

Deep south teams need to hire deep south coaches both for recruiting and fan acceptance. It is what it is.
I don't know if it's that. DeBoer had zero SEC experience when he got to Bama. His defense was a problem last year by Alabama standards, and maybe still is. His strength at UW was offense, and he doesn't have a Michael Penix Jr . He does have his OC from there back, but they have a new starter vs a Sr. like Penix. FSU always has talent. They collapsed last year, but they were going to be tough at home and Norvell is coaching for his job. Malzahn is about as good as it gets at OC, and with a new, but experienced, QB who fits his scheme he'll do some damage in the ACC. I'm not aware of recruiting being a problem for DeBoer so far. Fan acceptance will come with wins.

Agreed, but it's a short leash with "out of towners". Matt Rhule understood this when he hired local HS FB coaches and bought western boots for the Baylor job. Whether Waco, TX or Gadsden, AL, the locals prefer their own. IMHO.
(I lived in TX and NC for over twenty years total and traveled all states in between many times. I'm sticking by my observation.)

Frank, I think they'd happily accept a Yankee...as long as he wins. DeBoer is taking a lot of heat now and of course fans are taking shots at his Pac-12 lineage.

But keep in mind, they had a bunch of head coaches between Bryant and Saban. Guys like Mike DuBose and Mike Shula were born and bred Crimson Tide, but they didn't last long...because their records fell short of Alabama expectations.

Then came Nick Saban who was a West Virginia native with a largely Midwest resume as a coach. (Granted, he won a title at LSU after going there from Michigan State so there's that.) In any case, he had no Deep South pedigree but became a legend in Tuscaloosa because he won games.

I think Kalen may be on the hot seat. After the game one of his players hinted at some locker room issues. And their schedule is no walk in the park. Unfortunately for unhappy Tide fans, he's got a huge contract buyout. I think it's $70 million. Ouch.

I've never been to Alabama, so you have more insight into that. But Alabama has been a true national recruiting team for many years. They kind of took over the role from USC was under Pete Carroll. The best players want to go there. Baylor is much more regional in reach and has to compete with other Texas teams and others for far more local talent than Alabama can get. I'd guess it's a bigger deal at schools like Ole Miss and Mississippi State that are truly deep south and mainly recruit there.

I was referring to how local fanbases (not the admin & team mgmt), whether it's in the SE, MW, PA, CA, etc. Except for maybe ND, fans prefer hometown heroes. It's natural. Winning helps but losing hastens ousters as fans and donors get loud.
