Starters: Kyron Hudson (38 receptions, 462 yards, 3 TD at USC), Devonte Ross (76 receptions, 1,043 yards, 11 TD at Troy), Trebor Pena (84 receptions, 941 yards, 9 TD at Syracuse)

Penn State hasn't quite mastered the wide receiver position in recent years. That could change in 2025, with touted transfers at every starting position. Spring addition Trebor Pena may be the most impactful of the three. None should be surprised if he and quarterback Drew Allar turn into one of the Big Ten's better QB-WR duos.

Reading this makes me fell better about our struggles the last few years. Oregon at #5 ? has projected starters with 3 career receptions. And Indiana at #3? Who da thought that could happen. Will be interesting to see what Indiana does with a new Qb under center. Interested to see what PSUs transfer wideouts can produce.

Oregon only returns 3 starters on defense (5 overall). That and they gave up a lot to us last year may not be the test of our WRs that some anticipate.
[2] Evan Stewart (WR), Iapani Laloulu (C)[3] Teitum Tuioti (OLB), Matayo Uiagalelei (OLB), Bryce Boettcher (ILB)

They also lost Stewart to injury so just 1 on offense now.

Still, it's likely the 2nd most talented roster we'll face. Our performance could be indicative of what to expect vs OSU later.

To me, it's the first test, but not on the level of going into Columbus. I'm starting to think @ Iowa may be the stiffer test than Oregon in the white out.

Iowa plays Cover 2 Zone primarily. Oregon will man up quite a bit. Iowa could be a tougher game, but they will have to exceed expectations (anybody have them winning 9 games nationally yet?). Still, our WRs did good vs Zone last year.

Nothing will be on the level of OSU unless we schedule UGA or Bama.

If Iowa’s new transfer QB from SD State (?) pans out, they will be a good team…. as they are Always good at Special Teams and Defense. —Hopefully Ross can “vapor lock” them again, like he did at Troy last year

I doubt they are surprised by Ross again. I'm guessing his game against them last year was born out of who is this guy? Now they know who he is. That IMO should open up things for the other WRs. I doubt they want to let Ross get behind them again.

I can't help but to think that some of our WR problems were due to lack of chemistry with Allar and an over reliance on Warren. After all, Wallace was rated higher in the portal than the kids we picked up.

On the other hand articles like the one you posted seem to have a reasonably high opinion of Hudson, Ross, & Pena. I saw a preseason All BiG team that had Pena listed 4th team.

Only time will tell.

Those portal ratings are mostly dog crap. I mean they are really bad. I don't know who does them but they are mostly terrible.

I don't know how good the portal ratings are but a lot of people on the Rivals board complained about KLS. Then he transferred to Auburn and had almost 1k receiving yards. He was just drafted by the Chargers in the 5th round.

Wallace had over 700 yds receiving for PSU last year. He just came up short in big moments. Forget On3's ratings. He was rated the #17 WR in the portal by 247 (4*, .92). They ranked Pena 26th (4*, .91). They ranked Ross 30th (4*, .90) and Hudson 47th (3*, .88).

I don't know if our WRs will struggle again or if they'll have a huge year. I just think the past problems are more complicated than KLS or Wallace. I think Allar and play calling are all part of the equation.

KLS was a locker room problem. The issue was never his talent. He fit in at Auburn because they sucked and he was able to run up good stats in uncompetitive situations when they had to pass.

Wallace was also relatively good as a #2 or #3 but was never and will not be a #1. I wish that we could have kept him.

None of that changes that for some reason, these portal rankings are fairly inaccurate to in some cases almost strange. It's almost like the recruiting services haven't figured it out yet.

PSU rushed for 297 yards on the ducks last year when Oregon had the Steelers #1 pick DE on their DL. And their 6th year QB. And their record setting WR. They lost a great deal from their lineup and not even Mega-$$ can make replacing that production seamless.

Meanwhile the PSU running game is back in tact. I like our chances .....

Iowa lost a 300 lb+ DT to the Steelers in the draft as well. PSU will likely try and run over them as well.

Yeah, that’s probably true. But they’ll have more weapons to contend with on offense with 2 one thousand yard rushers, likely another solid WR, and any one of 3 or 4 TE’s that can catch…….maybe Ross will get “ lost” ( lol)
