You pre-ship it to a location, or travel with it in an approved case for the airlines.

It is legal, but there are protocols. You need to arrive early, declare the firearm, have it locked in an approved case, and check it.

according to the article, that is what he did. it states that he was checking it and told someone with the airline, that he had it. They called security and found it in his to be checked luggage locked in a strong box of some type. maybe you can't just show up. I see when I check into United there is a place to declare a firearm.

It's definitely strange. Something in the article isn't clear to describe why he was arrested. The protocols to fly with a firearm are well-established.
