Rhule and Nebraska

He's had three years. I thought his getting to a 5-1 record, regardless of the competition, showed that the program was tracking well towards success. A repeat of Temple and Baylor. And then came the Minny game a week ago. There were two main things that drew my attention: the offensive line and wide receiver rooms. Both were slow and ineffective IMHO. Maybe Matt sees this and is working to correct things over the next few years, but the Penn State fanbase will not be, and should not be, that patient. The big interview question for Rhule, and for all candidates, is whether he understands what needs to be done in the amount of time given and to provide a plan. BTW, QB Raiola's dad is the OL coach at UNL. That needs to be explained as well.

It is difficult to recruit at Nebraska and I think they have less NIL than us under Franklin and certainly less than us moving forward with donors opening up their wallets.

That is not an excuse to hire Rhule but a consideration.

Rhule would get huge NIL support. He would bring physical toughness that we have lacked under Franklin.

The question I have is can he recruit? Can he sell the program to elite talent? Is he really effective with the portal? I don't know.

The other big question is can he develop an offense and passing game? Perhaps a really good OC masks his deficiencies in this area.

Your point on Raiola's dad being the OL coach is a good one and one Kraft would need to address.

My gut tells me that Rhule is not the home run hire and won't do the recruiting things you mention, but then I think that no one was "the man" before they were the man. Ryan Day had no business doing what he's done at tOSU. Who TF is Ryan Day? Now obviously, Rhule has had HC gigs, but it's been Temple and then Baylor under circumstances beyond his control.

I'm doing my best to not care too much about this this. It seems like anyone is a 50/50 proposition. This is why Kraft is paid what he's paid. Call me when a decision is made.

"Coach Rhule, compare the Nebraska Cornhuskers to the Indiana Hoosiers performances over the past two years. What are the differences and the possible explanations for those differences?"

Never discount the Lion brand of toughness. Coach Bob was much better at getting kids to play Joe's brand of football.

His team is winning the close games this year. Franklin's teams were flashy but seldom tough. We need more tough kids and a coach who can bring it out in close games.
