*I had a hotel and plane reservation for this game. I cancelled them two weeks prior. I've had great luck at PSU games seeing some of the most iconic games in PSU's last 20 years (UM overtime, 6-4, beating a ranked NW the Sandusky year, Illinois 9 overtimes..etc). Thank goodness I didn't go.
*The opening drive was "uh oh" and the onside kick was "crap". But the 17-play, 8:16 drive was when I knew we were in deep ****.
*PSU had only THREE POSSESSIONS IN THE FIRST HALF! I am not sure I've ever seen that. PSU went TD, three and out, turnover on downs with :30 to go. The three and out was when Hudson dropped a 3rd and 6 pass that would have been a first down. I have no idea why Danileson was blaming Allar as at age 3 I knew that a ball dropped that hit the WR in the chest was the WR's fault. UCLA had a ten play/75 yard drive, 7 play 40 yard drive, 17 play 75 yard drive, a 6 yard 65 yard drive, and a 3 play 17 yard drive in the first half. That meant that our D was on the field for almost 20 minutes of the 30 minute half. Worse, PSU fumbles the ball on our first drive of the second half.
*Aside from the long drives, PSU made several critical errors before settling in mid-third Quarter
*Horrendous on-side kick coverage
*Hudson's horrible dropped pass at the worst possible time
*Luke Reynolds' fumble
*I lost count of how many missed blocks there were by the OL. And that is often OK, when you just get beat. But it was out of confusion, laziness, and lack of concentration. This UCLA DL isn't good.
*And let's not forget two drops by TEs.
*Near mid-third quarter, the play discrepancy was 60 for UCLA to 28 for PSU.
*I am sure several will call me an Allar apologist, but the kid certainly deserved better. He was 19 of 26 (with at least three drops), no INTs and two TDs. He ended up being the PSU leading rusher with 79 yards. I didn't see a lot of holes for Kaytron and Singleton, so it is hard to be too critical. In fact, hard to believe that Kaytron averaged 6.3 YPC (and with only 11 carries and two TDs, his YPC average was stat capped by the TDs).
*I read two analysts who said the WRs were not open and ran lazy routes. I'll post the links below (Klatt and Tengwall).
*I am sure that Rojas' loss was big. I have no idea the injury but it looks like he played at the end of the Oregon game and the announcement that he was injured didn't happen until Tuesday. With a travel day to the west coast, it looks like the staff didn't have time to prep a young LBer. Dom Deluca, a player I love, was just way too slow to catch UCLA's QB. Of UCLA's 435 total yards, its QB accounted for almost 70%. Having said that, there were some glaring holds on our DEs that were not called.
The Announcers
*This had to be one of the worst-announced games I've ever watched. Just mechanically, Nessler didn't know how to pronounce several players' names. He didn't know the UCLA FG kicker, who is one of the best in the B1G.
*I thought Daneilson's speculation that Rojas being gone was some kind of sinister thing, like a discipline issue. Without any information, I thought that was VERY unprofessional
*I have no idea why Danielson ragged on Allar, who a) had few opportunities b) had no time to throw and c) had several WR/TE drops. IMHO, Allar was the only player who showed up Saturday for PSU.
*They way overplayed their hand with the Neuheisel father/son thing. I get it but this isn't the first time a nepo baby has success when the average Joe who works hard to climb the ladder gets no fanfare whatsoever.
Saturday against NW is a critical game for the program. The real fans need to show up and support the team. This is college football and these are kids. Love or hate CJF, support the kids and the school. NW beat UCLA 17-14 two weeks ago and they had a cupcake in LA-Monroe last week. They played Oregon pretty well. While not a good program, they are better than last year and PSU needs to paste them. I suspect that the OL and DL line play has been too cute and they need to simplify. Any decision on CJF should be deferred until the end of the year.
