So hard to tell if we played well of not. While there were a couple of players on the Nevada team that came to play, most were pretty overwhelmed. Their S brought the wood a couple of times. Kudos to him. Chubba Purdy, I thought, played well and our defense struggled to contain his running.

I read, Tengwall, said that our OL had problems with executing Double Teams. He shows a play or two but I don't have the knowledge to know if this was a big part of the game.

Someone asked CJF in the post game presser if he was concerned about red zone plays since we stalled in the RZ several times. He said not really in that he called many of the RZ plays just to see certain matchups and performances. He implied he overrode the OC to get a chance to isolate on plays and players.

As expected, we got up a couple of scores and then let Allar practice with the WRs. Both Hudson and Pena looked good. I read that Hudson, while at USC, had the lowest drops of any player to catch 50 or more passes last season in the B1G. Both looked pretty fast so I think they'll be OK against man and they certainly have the chops against zone. I noted that Allar threw several deep outs to them (while never once going deep as N played a lot of 3 deep). The deep out is a pass that the NFL uses to test players because few can make that throw. The ball is in the air ~ 30 yards so there is time for the D to react and jump the route so it has to be on a rope. I noted a couple of plays where Allar really zipped it and Danielson pointed that out as well in the telecast. Again, it was against Nevada and not tOSU so one can't draw too many conclusions.

Looking at the stats, Hudson had 6 receptions for 89 yards or 14.8 YPC. Pena had 7 for 74 and 10.6 YPC. We really didn't throw to the TEs with Allar in their but Rapp had 3 catches and looked great. The only downside was that Clifford dropped a ball and really looked like he wasn't part of the game.

I read some concerns about the running game but Allen averaged 5.4 YPC and looked strong on the inside. Singleton was the guy who didn't have a great game with only 19 yards or 8 carries or a 2.4 YPC average. It was great to see Wallace in clean up time looking really good.

On defense, we got burned several times by Purdy running on passing plays. In addition, they hit a couple of really well executed screen passes. Once again, it is hard to get a bead on things as PSU was playing a ton of guys in the second half. What was concerning was the Nevada executed a very good first possession against our D until they fumbled on a great play by the Dentist (DDS). I thought the kid from NC, Amare Campbell, looked good and that BB could have used him last night against TCU. i didn't notice the DEs much and we only defended 52 plays.

On special teams, I read right before the game that our Nwosu was going to be our punter replacing Thompson. Thompson's done a nice job but CJF said that Nwosu, who also does our kickoffs, was really great and surpassed Thompson. I think the quote was that he is the closest to Jordon Stout we've got. Stout, you may recall, was our punter and now punts for the Baltimore Ravens. BTW, Nwosu is 6-6 and 292 lbs. We never punted so we'll see next game. FG kicker looked solid. Every kick was a perfect end over end and straight.

I know that CJF was really upset at the execution of the fake field goal. I am not sure what that was all about but we only had a center and Nevada lined up two guys over the center so one had a strait run at the QB who never got time to get off the play. My guess is that the QB should have called somebody over or called timeout. Maybe someone lined up wrong; I don't know.

Lastly, we had 5 penalties for 45 yards. I honestly don't recall them at all. But I feel like the two QBs executed pretty well given how many players were running on and off the field.

Overall, about what one would expect. The best thing was the timing between Allar and the two WRs. I think I heard CJF say that he didn't expect them to catch that many passes so was pretty pleased.

I have to say this, as well....Arch Manning looked awful. Just awful against tOSU. His footwork, sidearm throws, and missing open players (they ran a crossing patter three times that was wide open and Arch either made an awful throw or threw it to someone covered). He's got a long way to go. Sayin looked good, not great. The kid from Michigan is scary, Bryce Underwood. It will be interesting to watch him against OK next week. I thought the QBs from Clemson, Miami, ND and LSU looked good as well.

Good stuff, Sheriff.

But it doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "Obli's Observations" had.

Agree with the majority of your observations.
- Regarding the FG kicking. I think a few were more to the left side inside the uprights rather than straight down the middle. He should be able to tweak that.
- Agree on Manning. Very rough outing mostly his fault as you pointed out. He's been overhyped.
-- C.J. Carr (ND Redshirt Freshman QB seemed better but had three bad mistakes himself)
-- The Miami QB (Beck) was solid, poised, went through his progression. Looked so much better than when he was at Georgia. Definitely NFL high draft choice now.
-- Klubnick (Clemson QB) was average. I don't see his rating as #1 draft eligible QB
-- I thought Nussmeir (LSU QB) looked the best of those QBs to me in that game.
-- Still wait and see on Allar until much stiffer competition, though some of those throws were NFL ready. Can he do it against Oregon, OSU, and CFP teams?

Agree. My only point on PSU's kicks is that they weren't mis-hit. In golf terms, they weren't sliced or hooked. They may have been pushed or pulled a little but were stuck perfectly.

Good synopsis, Sheriff!

I agree with your overall take that it is hard to tell if we played well, average or below average. I think we played at least average for an opening game but I hear these complaints about the offensive line and I start to have my doubts.

I think the offensive line and Singleton performed the poorest of our team while Drew and the receivers were the best.

On defense DDS was a standout but struggling to remember anyone else. I guess Durant with the pick. Secondary was untested. Didn't notice much of Rojas.

I think the O-Line will get better, check that, they better get better! Someone posted that Rucci did not have a great game.

Not sure about the red zone comment from Franklin. Hard to believe he was not calling plays that would work or at least what he thought would work. He does not joke about stuff like that so I guess he is being honest.

As far as other QBs, I thought Sayin looked pretty good as their game plan was conservative. He is not at Will Howard's level but could be by the time we play them. Klubnik was not good, Nussmeyer was good and Manning was not ready for the big stage. CJ Carr was pretty good and will be good for ND but glad they lost. We will find out more about Underwood this weekend on the road at Okie. He may be the guy that extends The Cheater's winning streak over OSU. That game is at Michigan.

When the big games arrive and it's crunch time, all I ask is that the O can convert third and fourth downs with less than two yards to go. No corner fades, no vanilla up the middle, no getting tripped up by a defender shooting the gap, no forced throws into triple coverage, no taking sacks. Just tried and true, quick hitting power off tackles with block downs, backside pulls, and Ioane knocking out the DE. And RBs must chop the legs, power through, and even spin to get to the sticks or goal line.

Agree with the majority of your observations.

-- Still wait and see on Allar until much stiffer competition, though some of those throws were NFL ready. Can he do it against Oregon, OSU, and CFP teams?
Klubnik needs a running game. He has never been the type of QB to put the team on his shoulders and win it. Never. When he has balance, he is very good. Probably could be said for most QBs.

Is it just me or is Kaytron just a better overall back than Singleton? Nick was much more explosive as a freshman. I realize that there were practically zero holes and running lanes on Saturday but even during the last year s playoff run Kaytron was a bull through the hole and tough to tackle.

Think we should wait a few games until the OL shakes down with their timing/chemistry before pronouncing judgement . Both backs have improved in some ways IMO. Once the OL gels , it should be much more evident. JMO

Watched BWI show today. TFrank made a good point about Knowles defense. The days of the Manny all out havoc are gone. This defense is happy with a bunch of 2 yard runs.

DEs have a lot of straight reads. Think the DDS smashing the RB that Purdy pulled, his job was to take out the RB because others had the QB. Or Chaz on the spin move, he had rush the QB and wasn't responsible for contain (DDS was spying and got the sack).

Our DTs actually had more gashes into the backfield than I remember. Durant, sure, he's been doing it for 3 years. Gilliam, Blanding, White, all 3 of them made huge disruptions. Again, it's entirely too early to know for sure, but this is also a schematic difference. Our DTs aren't jumping gaps to overload a side to enable a blitz. One of them isn't holding ground to let a blitzer make a play. This is a tackle friendly defense IMO and could help recruit elite DTs.

LBs are asked to do a lot here. They have gap responsibilities and have to diagnose the play much moreso than simply run blitzing a gap. One of the better examples from Saturday was Campbell taking on a OL and forcing the RB to choose his hole and Campbell tackled him off the block. Run might have gotten 2 or 3 yards, but this is a play the last 3 years if our LB missed the gap or got blocked out, we relied on a S to make the tackle 7-9 yards down the field.

Another play, we beautifully matched up the Zone Read with DDS crashing inside, Rojas flowing to the outside (he made the tackle) and a S (don't remember who, might have been Woosley) had crept up and was there if the kick block had gotten to Rojas. The kick block was late or DDS washed it up on his crash (I'd have to watch the play again to remember 100%).

The defense worked. I think Knowles wanted Purdy to pass more, but he only threw 15 passes, only 7 of which were completed. If you want to talk about lockdown, the only defender credited with giving up completions was Woosley (believe he gave up 2). Harris, Collins, Washington, Dixon, even Jahmir Joseph (who played something between 15 and 25 snaps) none of them were credited as giving up a completion (PFF #s, not mine).

As for the offense, they were a bad snap away from putting up 50 pts (3rd and goal from the 1 became 4th and goal from the 10). Clean up the ineffective drive after the King Mack 73 yard KR and we could have scored 54 pts.

OL. Didn't appear to be the road grading, Joe Moore finalist group we were told about all spring, summer, and fall. Some of our combo blocks were done wrong (Tengwall covered this well). Donkoh was a little rusty, back at G (first live game G snaps since '23) and returning from injury. Both Tackles missed a few blocks and we worked from 7 different OL combinations Saturday.

Look at our 3 1st half TD drives. There was like 2 negative plays between those 3 series (the end zone incomplete pass to Hudson and a 2 yard sack of Allar). The first 2 were methodical, a balanced mix of run and pass. The last was a Franklin set up 2 minute drill that we executed splendidly.

Plenty good and enough bad to keep us working. Remember Oregon vs Idaho last year?

Re: OL.

Check out 1st down from the Tengwall video. I didn't catch this live, but our OL on this series (after the Mack KR) was:

Shelton
Shanahan
Dawkins
Cousins
Donkoh

Shelton and Shanahan fail big time on the 3t, he is in the back field instantly and blows the play up (3 yard loss for Singleton).

You can see in other plays involving Cousins and Shanahan why the staff is probably gonna roll with Donkoh at RG. He might be rusty, but on that one pass we had 3 OL trying to block 1 defender while the loop around was about to get home.

Kudos to Grunk. Kid is a fast decision maker. A less adequate passer probably eats some sacks on that TD drive he led.

One more shoutout to Rapp. He's going to continue improving. 2nd coming of 'Muth!

  • Just for fun...

I didn’t watch it, but the big ten guys are saying the Oregon QB looked really good.
