Steelers hire McCarthy

From 2006 to 2018, McCarthy led the Packers to six division titles, nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title. From 2020 to 2024, he led the Cowboys to two division titles and three playoff appearances. 😮

The GM needs to get him some players.

Andy Weidl, head of the Steelers player personnel, played high school ball at Mount Lebanon. He helped build the Super Bowl eagles. His brother is lead scout for the Chargers. Andy just interviewed for the ATL GM

I know some close friends of his. He is big on the OL & DL. He wants a great line and will settle for a good, not great, QB.

While I would prefer one of the young Rams guys, I don’t think this is quite as awful as a lot of people are saying. The guy is pretty good with offense, which is much needed in Pittsburgh. They have a dozen draft picks and while they probably could use a dozen new players to inject some youth, they need to package 3, 4 or even five of those pics to move up a little bit and get sure fire good players.

You absolutely need a top wide receiver, another offensive tackle, defensive lineman, linebacker, and defensive back.

Yep. In that Houston game, the LBs were doing nothing against that rookie RB who the production crew never let us forget was from USC.

To me it's a disappointment. McCarthy is a very good coach. But this seems like a recipe to continue to win 9 or 10 games and lose their first game when they get to a playoff game.

The Steelers roster seems to have more holes than even their abundance of draft choices this Spring can fill. Gone are the days when a team could get a draft such as the Steelers in 1974 got Swann, Lambert, Stallworth and Webster. Or 1971 when they got Ham, Lewis, White, Brown, Holmes and Wagner. There was no combine back then so teams with better talent evaluators could do much better than the other teams in the draft and that's what the Steelers did.

At this point the Steelers have a couple of older players from their limited in numbers nucleus of talent that may still have some trade value and could be traded to acquire more of the higher draft choices that they need to do a real roster restocking. I'd like to see them trade players such as Watt if they find a trading partner that would add another choice or choices in rounds 1 thru 3. With the 21st pick in the first round the Steelers are unlikely to get a top QB in the 2026 draft as there really only seems to be one top QB in the draft, Mendoza. I'd rather they make some trades and also bundle some of their many rounds 4-7 picks to end up with 7+ picks in rounds 1-3. They now have 1 first, 2 second, and 3 thirds. Get 2 or 3 more and take players at their core needs, 2 WR's, OL, DL, LB, Safety CB. Then start their young QB in 2026 along with the draft picks and take their lumps as the young players get experience. And then after a 5-12 season take another QB in next year's draft if Howard doesn't look like their next franchise QB. If Howard would do well they then could fill in their remaining needs in the 2027 draft and be on their way to actually competing to go deep in the playoffs.

So I was hoping for a younger head coach that would be a builder of a new team. Not someone that may only be interested in coaching a few years which is what I'm expecting from the 62 year old McCarthy.

McCarthy was obviously very successful in GB. His error was thinking that anyone could be successful with Jerry Jones as Owner/GM.
Ownership is THE most important thing in professional sports. Much like Dan Snyder took a successful franchise and made it a laughing stock for 25 years, Jerry Jones will never win. Early in his tenure, Jimmy Johnson effectively managed Jones, making him think all his ideas were Jones'.
Switzer won in 95, with the core of players that Johnson built and since then, it's been mismanagement for 30 years.
The Cowboys now stand as the team with the longest gap in playing in a conference championship in the NFC(Only the Dolphins and Browns are longer in the NFL).

All that to be said, I think McCarthy could be a great hire for the Steelers. Let's see if the GM/Owner give him a team capable of winning and how he does.
