Tengwall on Chaz Coleman "next PSU superstar DE..."

Kid is a game wrecker. He flashed week 1, but produced in week 2. We read about his motor, his effort play, but it was perfectly on display on that pass break up that is a catch 9 out of 10 times.
Coleman also seems strong enough and already understands leverage to at times manhandle larger OT's. Will be interesting to see if he can perform similarly, or nearly as well, against the better OT's he'll face in B10 games. Looking ahead, after a year in the PSU S&C program he should be even more physical....

PFF gave him a 96.8 pass rush grade. Carter never had a grade higher than 94.2.....

These highlights put me in the "believer" category on Chaz.... , and may put Kemajou back into the "yellow" category.

Kemajou didn't even play. Coleman clearly ahead of him and seems just about even with Harvey.

Whose bingo card had losing Carter #3 overall and then a true freshman just showing up and outperforming his best PFF game in his 2nd career game?

Now, I'm not naive enough to believe that Coleman won't have some freshman moments. But wow! A lot to be excited about here.

Dani Dennis-Sutton - 46 snaps
Zuriah Fisher - 34
Chaz Coleman - 24
Jaylen Harvey - 22
Yvan Kemajou - 12
Mylachi Williams - 10

Kemajou did play, but he's clearly in the 5/6 spot of the rotation. I assume he will play vs Villanova, but if he's borderline on the green Yellow line they will save his RS unless injuries force them. It really depends on the games after Oregon (I believe that the rotation get tighter that week)

Honestly, I was really excited about his verbal/signing because of his size and athleticism (he was also a very good bball player) . I figured he would be a major contributor but not in his Freshman year because he is so new to the DE position. His play is a much needed bonus. As you said, he will make some mistakes but I'll take it with his upward trajectory.

it was amazing to watch him run with the ball. It reminded me of Lavar Arrington. Long and lean with incredible athleticism. I recall seeing Lavar as a true freshman on a kickoff coverage team and turning to my brother and saying "who is that?" He's really fun to watch and he is just scratching the surface. He may end up being the best of all time.

Yeah, he was a high upside guy but no idea he'd be this far along. And he wasn't an early take likely, by nearly anyone. Late bloomer? The position switch kept him under the radar? I don't know but we stole a good one out of Ohio and that feels great.

The thing I saw with him was that his short area quickness and acceleration seems much better than his top speed. He's probably got a good 40 for a 250 lb DE. But it is his acceleration and suddenness that jump out on film along with good awareness and recognition.

He didn't even get his first offer until May of '24. I believe Ole Miss was his first P4 offer in August '24. We offered September '24.

His Sr year was his first year playing DE.
I recall Saquon had a similar story. He was a three-star who accepted a 'ship from Rutgers. PSU offered, and he eventually became a four-star. And then when he got into camp, the staff immediately saw that he was a phenom. Chaz' lack of play in HS obviously led to him being overlooked. But we've seen a lot of 3 star kids become superstars at PSU.

Another point on Coleman, he is going to complement DDS very well. Some of us were concerned that Abdul Carter drew the help and DDS was going to do that this season. Well, good luck sending your extra help to DDS if Coleman can be into the backfield in a split second. Then you have Durant's quickness on the inside to contend with. The Dline still needs to develop more depth and we seem to be trending that way, but we have some top end weapons already.

I think Franklin and staff identify them better than just about anyone. They find the gem and offer as early as just about anyone. The problem is when they really blow up before signing day like Justin Fields. Then the $$S programs come in.

Agreed. Someone had some kind of study that quantified player development from star ranking through the NFL. IIRC, PSU had the best (or one of the best) ratios for star ranking to NFL success of any college team. The staff has done more with less, which is a slight on recruiting but a win on development. Of course, those stats can be used to get better recruits.

After he gave his verbal to Penn State and was being noticed, I heard OSU put the full court press on to get him to flip. He was true to the early attention and offer from PSU and stuck to his commitment. Glad he's with PSU.

The best thing about Coleman might be that Franklin got him from Oh-high-ya, right from under Uh-high-ya state's nose.

I saw LA play Mt Lebo when he was a soph in high school and he was already a man among boys then.....
