The bowl game

Bringing in Becht doesn't have to mean running off Grunk.

1) There would be a competition for the job. Grunk may be good enough to win that.

2) Grunk will not be guaranteed to start at almost any top power 4 school. Look at Beau. He left to be the guy at Missouri and then was sharing reps until the other guy got hurt and then Beau got hurt and seems to have lost his job and is back in the portal. You would think this is a recent enough cautionary tale of someone that Grunk personally knows who transferred instead of waiting one more year.

3) Grunk has 3 years of eligibility. If Campbell brings in Becht and Becht wins the job and doesn't get injured like our QB1 did last year, then Grunk still would almost certainly get 2 years of starting. Also, he would get 3 years of development under Campbell who turned 3 star Brock Purdy into a top NFL starter and now 3 star Becht into a 9000+ yd passer. It is highly unlikely that Grunk could transfer to a staff that has a better current track record at developing this position. Essentially, Campbell is a huge upgrade at QB development over Franklin.

All fair points.

The main thing is that there's an honest competition without Matt putting his thumb on the scale in any way to favor his Iowa State guy Rocco.

Matt strikes me as a straight shooter who has his priorities straight, which is first of all winning football games. I trust him to do the right thing with regard to this QB situation.

The problem will be if Grunk bails by portaling...and then Rocco doesn't pan out.

I've actually heard from a buddy that Grunk is staying and then I saw it posted on another site that someone heard from a friend that he was staying. I have seen nothing confirming this so I've just been keeping my eye out for an announcement.

Grunk is a game breaker. He keeps the team to a late TD tlagaihst Indiana under great pressure. Only 3 crazy catches beat him
.

With Grunk's performances as measured by QB ratings, Becht is not needed IMO. Grunk waited his turn and performed when it was his turn. Becht's 3-yr completion %: 63%, 59%, 61%. Grunk's one-year: 69%. And with Grunk getting 99% of the snaps against Nevada, FIU, and Villanova, PSU beats Oregon. And who knows what would have happened in Columbus? There is nothing that says he's a fluke at this point.

I like grunk alot. We still have a massive qb depth problem. Someone has to be brought in. Who is going to transfer in to sit behind a current redshirt freshman? We need at least 1 competent backup who isn't injured and can win games if need be. And we need probably 4 qbs total on the roster who aren't walk ons that a backup WR can't beat out.

Right now we have grunk, smolik who has been injured pretty much every year, 2 walk on qbs that couldn't beat out baby cliff, and HS senior Falzone will be inbound.

Ideally we keep Grunk as starter, bring in a competent backup with experience, smolik gets and finally stays healthy, and falzone surprises with his maturity. We definitely need a portal qb. I'm hoping that grunk is confident enough and has a long term vision of what he wants to be to not get run off by it. Because a few years of development under the staff that turned 3 star Purdy into a top NFL starter and turned 3 star Becht into a 9000+ yd passer so far has a chance to mold grunk into the best qb that he can be.

Yep, we need a QB just for depth. Doesn't have to be Becht, but need someone. If Grunk AND Smolik stay you could try to get a guy who was just another P5 backup, but is Smolik leaves too then you go for the ISU backup potentially or a g5 or lower guy who has played so you at least have experience as a backup

Good point. If Grunk is the guy, can we even keep Smolik? I'm sure that he wants to start someday, and he has less eligibility than Grunk unless he gets a medical RS. We may need 2 portal QBs. But who comes if you have a RS Soph as your likely starter? We could be limited to guys who were freshmen this past season or are OK with a likely backup role.

Yep I think someone who was a backup somewhere or we offered a Juco DT do maybe the route to go is get a Juco QB as well.
Two freshmen QBs coming in so could be ok

I forgot about flipping former ISU qb commit Case Evans (3 star). I suppose with him and 4 star Falzone it isn't quite as dire depth wise unless we are talking experience at the college level. Definitely 1 portal qb is warranted. Not sure 2 is necessary.

I see that USC’s D imploded in the 4th quarter and OT. I wonder if Lynn’s not being there had an adverse affect.
I'm guessing that losing your DC a day or 2 before the game could be tough. They held them to14 through 3 qtrs. So I think their plan going into the game was probably fine. Late game collapse though. They did lose some DTs to the portal so perhaps that was part of that. Maybe lacked depth but who doesn't in these bowl games?

I hope Grunk's success wasn't based on his interim coach.:p And boy did that defense play well under Poindexter coordination ;). Oh, what could have been. The new coach has a lot to live up to, and better not screw this up or

I just reviewed your recent posts (easy to do for a new poster) and nearly all are trying to stir $hit up.

That's always a concern when coaches and even CEOs come in and bring "their guys". Like Pepsi guy Sculley becoming CEO at Apple. There are culture and strategy aspects that may not translate in a different environment. Grunk's performance may have been based on a less uptight culture under Terry. And Poindexter may have simplified the Knowles differential calculus / linear algebra approach. We'll see what Campbell can do. And, yes, he has a lot to live up to because 1) he accepted the job and 2) he's getting paid a sh!tload of money for doing it.

Mr Heisman, Vandy QB Pavia, who thought so highly of himself that he should have won the heisman over the QB who had his team at #1 in the country, could only muster 3 points in the first half vs Iowa. Hope Iowa can smoke them in the 2nd half.

I can’t stand the kid after that ceremony but he did just throw a perfect bomb for 6

I fully expect Grunk to stay at least through spring ball.

He hasn’t said anything yet.

He would want to spend time with Campbell and staff because of their track record.

He should be very confident of winning the starting job after his performance.

He knows he can transfer out after spring ball if he doesn’t click with the new staff or just gets beat out of starting.

But….🤷🏽‍♀️

If someone like Arch Manning comes in as a 5* prodigy, then good game or bad game, he'll be given a lot of slack. He'll be rooted on. If a 4* like Grunk comes in without the fanfare, people are going to wonder if he has what it takes and are quick to give him the hook. (No PSU fan or media even knew who Rocco Becht was until about a month ago. E.g. Who's the QB of the Houston Cougars or Arizona Wildcats?) It's just the way of the world.
