The Way Too Early Oregon Game Plan

Oregon has lots of team speed, employs deceptive motion (e.g. play action) on offense and has a very mobile QB. Hiding defensive schemes and smart, disciplined LB play will be key for PSU. Some DL stunts may also disrupt the Ducks' game plan and cadence. Defensive predictability will be punished. The safeties will need discipline as well because either a pass or a run will require their immediate attention. Summary: PSU is aggressive and deceptive on D, but without being sucked in. LBs must read through the deception. On offense, simple quick passes and runs. Ball control and momentum (not a Franklin philosophy).

On defense we need to control the line of scrimmage with DDS etc. That other DE position is crucial, Fisher, Harvey, Coleman Kemajou. They won't get a double team, need to make plays.

Knowles needs to present different looks and disguise them well. Need to confuse Moore, he is only a Freshman. Linebackers have to play disciplined and stay in position. If our DL stays in control then the LB can come up and make plays.

Allar has to play well but he does not need to be spectacular as long as the defense is solid. He will need to make throws and no mistakes. Utilize all our weapons and keep them guessing. Would like to see utilizing Singleton in the pass game. Gotta use our TEs. Pena, Hudson, Ross need to get separation and Allar has to be accurate.

I think we need 28 to win it.

I know that Gabriel is gone but former 5* Dante Moore might be just as good. Last year Oregon went for 469 yds and scored 45 pts against a defense that had Abdul Carter, Kobe King, and Jaylen Reed.

I think we're going to need more than 28 pts to win. It would be nice if we could control TOP with our running game but that seems to be a question right now.

Like those failed three yards for the first down plays, Drew getting sacked also stops momentum. IMO, don't run a lot of those RBs running laterally with the ball behind the LOS, and also have some quick passes (<2 secs) in the quiver. Limit slow-to-develop plays.

Looking at the schedule, it is pretty weird. We've got a bye after playing three cupcakes. Oregon, who already played OK State, plays NW and Oregon State before us (no bye). Just a note on OK State, they only beat UT Martin 27-7 in their opening week. And UT Martin got walloped 42-17 by UTEP Saturday. It is going to be a long, long season in Stillwater. While OR recruits really, really well with deep NIL pockets, four of their five starting OL are new to go along with a 60% new roster. They had ten players drafted into the NFL. Back to their OL, they are expected to start three xfer players who come from Wyoming, Nevada and TX State. The announcers mentioned the kid from Nevada who was an all-conference player and was considered, by many, to be the top portal player in last year's class.

Both DTs were drafted. One by the Steelers in the first round and the other went in the second round.

Interestingly, Oregon does not play Ohio State, Michigan or Illinois. The kid who killed us last year was also drafted. That is WR Tez Johnson, who had 11 catches for 181 yards.

We'll be the first quality team they play. We can be far more physical than what they've seen this year. I would expect us to try and run the ball against their two new DTs. I will say this, they are BIG along the D and O lines.

USC might be the only top 25 team Oregon plays aside from PSU.

They have some new guys on defense and I'm hopeful we actually are awake for the 1st quarter this time. Knowles is an upgrade vs Allen. We are in front of a raucous White Out crowd which will be a motivator for the D. With all that said you could be right, we may need 35 but I don't think we need 40. Depends how effective Moore is, he's the wildcard. I have to believe he will not be as effective as Gabriel was against us.

Yep. Knowles won't allow 15 receptions over the middle to the same guy. We hope.

We hope. He has lots of film to dissect from when OSU & PSU played Oregon. Knowles OSU defense struggled against Oregon as did PSU's against Oregon. Oregon probably runs same offense but a different QB who is also very talented. It is necessary Knowles and his staff come up with a better gameplan than either him or Allen had last year vs the Ducks. Huge game in so many ways.

In the Rose Bowl Oregon couldn't do much vs OSU's Knowles coached D.

Yes, he had made adjustments to the game earlier in the season at Oregon for when they played in the Rose Bowl. I expect those adjustments will be incorporated into PSU's gameplan. Different defensive personnel. Looking forward to seeing what Coach Knowles and his staff determine and any adjustments as the game progresses.

Watching Oregon vs Oklahoma State. My first foray into the '25 Ducks. Some thoughts.

-offense is stout. They can run, they can pass.
-The Tulane RB transfer seems to actually be 3rd string; their other 2 are that good.
-Moore looks great. Not quite 6th year Gabriel great, but he's accurate and has velocity. Not a running threat yet, but he looks like he could be.
-WRs are good. What they lack in returning production they make up for in talent. A lot of speed. Good hands.
-OC Stein has picked up a lot of AKs gamesmanship. Multiple unbalanced lines, TE Sadiq as a Wildcat QB on short yardage.

-defense looks solid. Cowboys had some running room.
-Corners play the ball, go for pbu on the hands.
-Safeties can tackle.
-DL isn't as strong as last year. Think they added some size, but skill isn't there yet.

Tough game to gauge a whole lot. I think Okie State could be pretty terrible. Backup QB first start since HS. Offense just couldn't do anything passing and got down big early. Defense terrible at alignment. Almost every big play, Stein schemed up unbalanced lineups and Okie State didn't match it. Very slow.

Otherside of this: Oregon is fast. I think overall, they might be a faster team this year than last. Moore doesn't appear to be any drop off from Gabriel. Perhaps a lesser run threat, unsure if he can evade pressure similarly, but he's probably a same level or better passer.

Caveat, Okie State secondary is very sloppy. Very slow too. No pass rush. Their best player is LB #5. Tackling machine they said transfer in from Akron.

The line dropped this morning when future lines were made live again. We went from -6.5 to -4.5 and based on this perform, it's very easy to see why (based on our FIU inefficiency). White Out crowd will be huge.

Be interesting to see how the next 2 weeks go. We got Villanova. I'd like to see this type of big play offense and overall offensive efficiency from us.

As for Oregon, they got Northwestern (who could be as bad or worse than Okie State but I don't really know yet) and Oregon State (rivalry game). What I look for is does either team figure out anything as far as slowing the ducks O down?

Maybe a better defensive performance from PSU this year with similar offensive results as last year. Add the white out and it's PSU 34, UO 24. 👍

Franklin won't do it, but maybe against teams with these Kliff Kingsbury offenses, a more ball control, time off the clock type of tempo is more appropriate. Not a huge shift, but knowing when and how to take more time off the clock.
Referencing basketball again, a half court offense rather than a fast break offense. Paternoesque.

I have no idea what will happen. Last year was high scoring. It is vital that PSU starts strong on both sides of the ball to get the crowd involved early & to stay engaged the entire game. If you attend, bring the noise.
