Thoughts on Kyle Whittingham to Michigan?

I found it surprising. I think he's a good bet to get the program back on track from an integrity standpoint. From an on-the-field standpoint, I think it's interesting. His philosophy seems like a good fit. But I thought some of his teams at Utah underperformed, and he's not getting younger. I feel like CMC was a better get right now. I'm just glad they didn't get DeBoer.

Personally I think this is about as good a hire as they could have pulled off. And it is timely before the portal opens. I was hoping they would go into portal season without a head coach.

There were some tumors that Utah wanted him to make some changes. He didn’t like the oversight so retired. It will be interesting to see how older crusty Coach handles the big time program like Michigan. But he’s always been considered to be a solid guy and a solid coach

LMAROFL. They need to drop DEI and fire their fat slob AD. No problems are solved until you recognize them. Keeping him is typical Michigan arrogance.

Wittingham has had Utah ranked in the top 25 for each of the last dozen years. I don't know if he's a better coach than Campbell but IMO he has a more proven resume and that attracts recruits.

What do you have against DeBoer?

I don't know. Wittingham is pretty old. There is a very good chance that his best coaching is behind him. He could have more to work with at UM but I'm not sure old and final poll unranked in 3 of the last 5 years, 5 of the last 8, 9 of the last 15, and 12 of his 20 completed seasons is going to attract recruits. His highest final poll ranking was in 2008 and his only other top 10 finish was #10 in 2022. Most of the kids he will be recruiting weren't even born in 2008.

Granted it is at Utah but very consistently throughout his head coaching tenure his teams have only been ranked 40% of the time and most of those rankings have been the lower half of the top 25. If you count his years that they didn't finish in the top 25, they might have averaged being a top 25 to top 30 team over his 20 years. That's not bad for Utah but it doesn't scream come play for me at 66 years old.

I think he will be a good coach but not a great coach. Better than Brady Hoke or Rich Rodriguez. Doubt that he will ever be elite. Seems to me that the really elite coaches come from assistants to Great programs (Kirby Smart, Joe Paterno) or from very small but extremely successful football programs (Jim Tressel, Curt cignetti)

I love DeBoer. He was my number one choice for PSU. Every national writer was falling all over themselves to tell us that he was a serious option for Michigan, but not for us. That's likely complete BS. But since we didn't get him, I'm glad they didn't either.

I feel Warde Manuel should be gone, also, no doubt. Too much has happened on his watch. Michigan has an interim president, so they probably prioritized the football coach hire to beat the transfer portal window.
