Week 1 FTB, Updated 9-2-25 With Codutti

Havoc plays per game by year:

2022: 20.8
2023: 16.7
2024: 15.0.

Penn State had 17 on Saturday in Knowles' first game.

Codutti will dissect the transfer WRs. Sharer says it'll be out late tonight or early tomorrow morning.
There is a lot of noise coming from tOSU that Matt Patricia is an upgrade from Knowles. I have no idea if that is accurate but I thought Arch Manning looked incredibly bad. I mean, like shocking. This kid started four games for TX last year and has two hall of fame uncles. I am sure he'll improve but even his most basic fundamentals were just horrible.

Absolutely agree with the "noise" part. The network analysts, who are big NFL fanboys, were in awe of how Patricia's NFL experience and decisions confused Arch and the Horns. They didn't mention it directly, but he may even be better than the great Dom Brown.

Patricia didn't cause Arch to dirt 4 or 5 passes Saturday. Arch was a Tebow-esqe QB in HS that played 2A ball. If his last name was anything else, we'd likely not know who he was. There is a reason he was sent to Texas to work with Sark and didn't even sniff the portal last year: its because he isn't a finished product.

What Patricia did do is he took advantage of having a very strong secondary and disguised a lot of coverages. Beyond the poor mechanics, beyond the accuracy issues, he gambled on 2 things:

1. that Arch couldn't read the defense post snap.
2. That Sark wouldn't run the ball more and would keep passing

Watching a lot of the pass plays, Patricia either had 2 men in the zone or a WR was open and Arch overthrew him or dirted it.

Another key takeaway: Texas couldn't score in the red zone. Stopped on 4th and goal at the 1 and stopped again on 4th and 3 at the 9. Similar to our game with them last year, 2 wasted red zone trips vs OSU equals 7 pt loss.

My take on Patricia is that it's entirely too soon to anoint him as an upgrade over the guy who architect'd a National title winning defense. He was just as lucky as he was good that Arch was overrated and or just had a bad day (we've watched OSU do that to Allar and others as well).

We will know more, possibly, about Texas by mid October when they play Florida and Oklahoma b2b. I would already say the UGA game is 99% loss #2 today, but that's just based on last year.

I'm also very interested in how OSU performs vs Washington and Illinois, both road games vs teams that should be able to run and pass and could have decent defenses.

There was a reason he couldn’t beat out Ewers last year who ended up a late round draft pick.

I saw three crossing patterns that were wide open that arch either didn’t see or missed, and they were all very critical plays in the game

Just like many other things like the PSU OLine performance it is too early to make any assessments about Patricia. He obviously knows what he is doing, they sin't hiring some nobody. His NFL experience helps tremendously. Remember he failed as an NFL head coach, there is a big drop from NFL head coach to college DC even if it is OSU.

To make the claim at this stage that he is an upgrade over Knowles is ridiculous. Anyone and you don't have to be an Xs and Os guy who watched the Texas game saw that Manning had many unforced errors that had nothing to do with what Patricia did. A better QB performance arguably wins that game for Texas. Let's not forget the game is 14-14 if Texas can figure out how to run a QB sneak. Was the Texas fail at the goal line all attributed to some genius scheming by Patricia or some horrific playcalling by Sark?

One thing I do know because it happens every year, when we play OSU their defense will be stingy as heck and nothing will be easy. If Allar doesn't bring it along with a well called game by Kotelnicki we will lose.

Come on. You do no that it's not accurate. They are still trying to figure out why they lost the top DC in college football and are still in damage control mode.

Manning looked bad because he is bad. He had wide open receivers that he threw the ball into the ground in front of them. Their new DC had nothing to do with how bad Manning looked.

Agreed. I was just reporting that Patricia is now being anointed as the best DC that ever coached a college football game here in Ohio.

After Michigan runs over them they may think differently......

Hopefully, PSU will get them thinking differently as well, but Franklin will have to get his team playing at a much higher level than what we say last Saturday to make that a reality.

The Kotelnicki-Allar combo must be on, for each and every opponent. No forcing plays and no forcing passes. It's game theory, yes, but not to the point of overthinking.

Don't know if already posted.

I didn't notice watching the game but read a couple of places that PSU not have any pre snap motion plays during the game.

We did use presnap motion. On the first series, they did the Vega motion play I believe.

On the Codutti video, he shows a pass play where Hudson motioned from the outside WR spot to between a WR and the LT.

We might not have used as much motion as usual, that would require some # crunching to know for sure.

Something to watch for this week.
