Week 10: Penn State at #1 Ohio State (Noon, Fox) Game Thread

Betting line opened at 17.5 and has shot up to 20.5 as per my prediction. And I see it going higher still.

One of the interesting aspects of this is that tOSU hasn't played anyone good outside of TX. And TX isn't good. They beat TX, Grambling, Ohio, Washington, Minnesota, ILL, and Wisconsin. The only team ranked in the top 25 today is TX, and they are at 20.

tOSU is among the best teams in the nation, IMH,O but the reality is that they haven't played any really good teams.
 
OSU's defense is #1 in points allowed and in total yards. Their offense is #8 in 3rd down conversions. Kotelnicki and Knowles will figure it out.
Lions tough it out as best they can. 31-10 Buckeyes.

Yes. As failed long passed pulled the secondary deeper, Allen OL and the OL had success. Knowles's offense cluttered the LOS area by keeping secondaries close. It was the coaching, not the OL

This is one of the biggest mysteries and reasons why our offense is putrid (excluding now that we have Grunk although not saying Allar was really good).

Going into the season we thought we had this juggernaut running game, Singleton, Allen and an AA OLine. The only thing that panned out was Allen. So Singleton is now horrible as in not even worthy of a sniff by the NFL lousy for some unknown reason and the OLine is below average which is confounding. I guess we were never that good and there was no improvement (blame goes to Traut, AK and Big Game James). So Shelton was supposed to be really good, nope, Vega, meh probably could be considered good, Dawkins, nope, Donkoh, nope, Rucci, nope, Cousins, nope. Amazing that we thought we had an "A" O'Line in actuality is a "C minus or D" OLine. How does that happen? Every single "expert" analyzing this team in the pre season was dead wrong. Watch, 3 of these OLine guys will end up starters in the NFL. I think Franklin had no clue how to develop a power, physical OLine. It is like our QBs and WRs, he took good talent and didn't develop it at all.

I didn't expect a "juggernaut" running game. We weren't able to simply run the ball down anybody's throats last year (except 1st half vs ND) so I didn't expect it this year.

But I thought we would have a "good" running game. Allen & Singleton weren't Saquon but they were proven runners. The OL didn't have an Orlando Pace type player but they were pretty good and guys like Donkoh were coming back from injury. The strength of this OL is/was depth.

I think the problem with the running game is that opponents attack the LOS because they don't respect our passing game. I have no explanation for what happened to Singleton but it's clear to me that Franklin cost us one or two games by protecting him.

Singleton sucked last year too. He was shoe lace and arm tackled repeatedly.
It just wasn't as obvious to some because the competition sucked even more and he would break these long runs to help his average.

What's utterly shocking to me is that he was still our starter coming into this season and through three games.

Our OL is fine. Not great but not terrible. Definitely better than most of our opponents.

The issue is/was the playbook and coaching. Big Game James was all about the big play. And that doesn't win tight games.

That is exactly right. It's almost like someone raised on Madden was running the program. And too many complex concepts involving formations, pre-snap movement, blocking schemes and defense may create more confusion than success. Maybe just lining up and punching the other team in the mouth gets the job done.
