Week 8: Penn State at Iowa (7:00 PM, Peacock) Game Thread

This game was lost by the same coaching decisions we endured the last 14 yrs. Going on 4th down, up 5, in your own territory is unforgivable.
We were in that situation because we ran Singleton on 3rd down. Same thing on 3rd down our last drive.

It's as though Franklin called in the plays when it mattered.

Terry Smith was his AHC for 10 seasons.🤷
Made many of the same boneheaded situational decisions the JF made

Terry Smith reverted to James Franklin on our last possession by running Singleton instead of Allen. Then he called a TO which we needed to get the ball back after missing on 4th down.
Not sure why we insist on running Singleton in late-game situations. Singleton should mainly be used for receiving, and not shovel passes.

Who showed up to play and who disappeared?
Kaytron showed up. So did Wheatley. Kickers have been solid all season.

I didn't see the game but radio announcers said we did a poor job sealing the edge as usual. Can somebody confirm this?

Radio announcers also complained that our LBs kept falling for fakes and giving up big runs. I see Campbell only had 1 tackle.

Yes, we lost contain like normal. And yes, our LBs ran themselves out of the play.

On their go ahead td play one of our defenders ran right past the ball carrier and tackled some random guy who didn’t even have the ball smh

Penn State's running those counter-intuitive, 3D chess plays like the famous running right at Bryce Young play years ago is indicative of a lack of capability and/or confidence IMHO. Kotelnicki fits right in. The new regime will need to change the culture.

All-in-all, it was a good effort. Tough place for a QB to get his first start. Some coaching mistakes, but it was attempting to win. It won't get any easier, the next couple of games.
Growth does us no good. Wheatley & Allen played great but this is their last year. Grunk made some mistakes but also some good plays so I guess that's good. Howard got in the game.

Knowles and Kotelnicki didn't grow.
