Who are Freshman most likely to be "greenlighted" according to CJF

Story over on BWI McAndrews front page quotes CJF as saying DE Kemajou, CB Dixon, and my man DE Chaz Coleman whom Ibwas really excited about when he signed. CJF said they knew Coleman was a "freakish" athlete when they recruited him but were shocked to see how quickly he has progressed given he only played one year @ DE in high school.
Wowzer, if they're "greelighted" then they get lots of PT during the entire season. Terry Smith has all but said Dixson is the #4 CB.
Excited to watch them and other Freshman who we'll at least see in the OOC games.

Franklin mentions that Coleman is already up to 250 ("and still skinny, which is incredible" he relayed).

Big framed DE. I hope he doesn't go overboard on adding size/weight, as the last few great PSU pass rushing DE's were not the biggest. Strength combined with quickness and twitch off the LOS is what made Ebiketie, Robinson, Carter and the others a headach for offenses and OT's......

He needs the weight if he is going to contribute this year. Like Rojas, I don't think thet will go overboard.

If he has "one of the best spin moves he's seen in a long time" that is pretty crazy considering that would be better than Carter.

Secondly, he wasn't highly recruited. Goes to show that the star ranking system isn't all that.

Tengwall runs through a lot of it, but the gist is he was a basketball kid who played QB for his team. The switch to DE allowed his athleticism to shine. He didn't even get his first offer until May '24 (close to home Akron).

The fact that an Ohio kid turned down the Buckeyes (seems like every kid in the state is raised on loving them) tends to blow my mind, but I look forward to what he can do in the blue and white. The more that comes out on our young DEs, the easier it is to understand Enai White's move to DT.

Allar is an Ohio kid as well.

But if you look at tOSU, their roster is stacked with kids from other parts of the country (FL and TX specifically). I've heard that there are several coaches of high end high schools who haven't been happy with blue chip kids being passed over by tOSU for a kid in TX or Illinois. tOSU is going to get their kids, but Ohio is good recruiting ground as football is king and those kids that are good and get passed over by tOSU are wide open to PSU offers.

Both Allar and Coleman and their families seem to have had the same situations. PSU was in on both of these Ohio payers early, before OSU came around to them with offers and pressure to commit to their home state school OSU. But Franklin and his staff had been recruiting them hard early and the players and their families knew that PSU wanted them and would take their commitment long before that was the case at OSU. Their families recognized that loyalty and obviously also believed that that the PSU coaches could develop them the way they wanted, as well as the overall campus and accademic program being top rate, and the fact that they were loyal people got them to stick with PSU.

Like you said, most Ohio players just drop their other offers, or commitmenets, once Oh-high-ya comes calling, but fortunately for PSU (and us fans) these players and their families stuck with Franklin and his staff due to the work they put in and the early belief they had in Allar and Coleman.

Sounded like he already has the weight to contribute. It said he has put on 25 lbs in a short time on campus.

Exactly! Lol

See, that's why it's even more amazing. We didn't offer until September '24. Granted, Ole Miss was his first P4 offer in August, but nobody was on this kid for long.

OSU came around in November after missing on 2 other kids the best I remember. Really glad he stuck with us, but I'm extremely shocked that he did considering the circumstances.

tOSU was focused on Devin Brown from AZ. He was a five-star QB who committed to USC, then flipped to tOSU. He lost out to McCord and transferred to Cal. McCord was dumped after starting a year and transferred to 'cuse and that resulted in them getting Howard from Kansas.

In this case, specifically, there was a lot of angst around why tOSU would go after out of state kids instead of in-state and Allar. There was, and is, a feeling that tOSU was star struck by out of staters because they see a lot of in-state kids and know their good and bad. Had Allar gone to tOSU, he'd have started last and this year.

No guarantee that Allar would have started. Something is off with Ohio St QB evaluations. They sent Joe Burrow packing who was the #1 pick and Heisman. They just McCord packing who lit it up at Syracuse and was drafted. They do have so much top talent but sometimes they run off the better player who was forced to sit behind lesser players. It's weird.

There are never any guarantees, but Allar is clearly better than what the Bucks have had this and last year. Burrow was sent packing because he wasn't a dual threat to run and throw, which is what they wanted at the time. LSU, with one of the best WR rooms ever, was a perfect fit for Burrow. But as we've seen with the NFL, for as good as he is, he gets hurt a lot.

That may be true, but they may not have started Allar as a true soph and that may have gotten Allar to transfer out 2 years ago. It's really hard to look back and predict how circumstances play out for different decisions by players as some mature quicker than others and then some just pop with their light going on at different times and different experience levels which really make the coaches job of managing their QB room and talent so crazy in today's portal era of college football.

I agree that Drew may have xfered after his Soph year but he'd have also red shirted, giving him another year. as it turned out, the tOSU staff soured on their QB and they went shopping and found Howard. Had Allar been there, he'd have gotten a shot as a Soph and would almost certainly have started two more years. If Howard xfered, he'd probably have gone to a different school.
