Why was Franklin Hired?

It was truly celebrated as a home run. Spot on comments. It’s the contract extension that is troubling. Right? That was a sad sight yesterday watching him walk off the field, holding his daughter’s hand. He is a good solid man, but what happens now?
Not only the contract extension, but the fact that he keeps running through coordinators and can’t figure out his own inadequacies. It seems to me that there’s no self reflection after games or end of seasons on how he needs to change, but rather just finding a new Coordinator so that he can blame the previous one for anything that went wrong.
Pardon me loves the loyalty that he shows to his players, and I’m sure the players and parents love that too but at some point, he needs to make some changes.
I thought it was a home run at the time...and still do. I mean, the man is a good coach and has done a lot of good things at Penn State, most recently getting us to the Final Four of the playoffs last year.
I think those agonizing 4th quarter losses to Ohio State in 2017 and 2018...throw in the USC Rose Bowl loss...sort of set a tone for the program that we never really broke free of. Add in the fact that we've always been the red-headed stepchild of this conference. They never liked or accepted us into their little club. One of their refs memorably told one of our players on the field that we shouldn't even be allowed to play football.
I mean, that was the mindset and that's the backdrop for the phantom-blades-of-grass replay call against Oregon. Seriously, if the Oregon guy had scored on the play, does anyone seriously think replay would have made the same call? I don't.
None of this explains or excuses our loss yesterday. I'm only doing an amateur armchair psychoanalysis of Franklin's mind at this point. He took his best shot and it was a very good one. But speaking of shots, I think he's taken too many to the head. I won't even get into the issues with Drew and Nick and the coordinators, etc.
All this said, he has a buyout currently in the range of $55 million and I honestly don't see that any proven ace coach would want the Penn State job. He's not going to be fired. Whether he might get an offer at a place like Arkansas or Florida and decide he's had enough of the Big-10 is a different story.

I thought the program was really trending upwards, and then Covid hit, and he completely botched the program"s response. Then he botched NIL when the Supreme Court ruling came down. His offensive philosophy screams small school team mentality. He is what he is, always reacting, and rarely dictating.
CFB is what we saw yesterday. A mobile QB who makes things happen as the play develops. One who doesn't have a bunch of plays strapped to his wrist. CFB is also not playing favorites to help them get into the NFL.
It's also not pissing away money on facilities to the level of stupid, particularly if on-field performance doesn't match it. I wonder what UCLA's training facility looks like.

The contract extension has put the university in an impossible spot it seems.
$50m is the cost of righting a $100m+/year program. To stop the bleeding, both financially and to its brand name. That's it. There are no other options. Pay the man, apologize to all stakeholders, and have a well thought out plan already in hand for building the future.
