2025 Breakout Players

Oh I heard him; I just believe that at this point, if he is necessary for DE vs run strong teams then just leave him there all season. If you are moving a 4th year player to DT, I would figure that you are hopeful he can gain another 10-20 lbs and perhaps retain some quickness.

Compared to how other players fared with this move, the path to playing time seems next season at best. All opinion, all reading between the lines, all assumption at this point

I think that's a little harsh. He obviously underperformed at A&M but he contributed. PSU was willing to take a shot on him and they discovered two things: 1) He's too big to be a top DE and 2) The team is thin at DT. So give him a shot there. He'll probably be the 4th guy this year but we need a 4th guy. Next year he might start or be a key backup.
Don't hold your breath that he will do much this year. As for next year, who knows as he will be behind a bunch of younger DTs. There is a reason he underperformed at A&M and it is not A&M.

I understand but I also understand that DT/DE depth is a concern on this roster. If either Durant or Ford gets hurt we're going to need some help. And next year those two guys will be gone. And what happens if DDS gets hurt? We're already missing Granville.

I don't expect him to "emerge" and become a star at this point. I just think he might be able to contribute.

You are being kind when you say contributed: 13 games over 3 seasons. 11 tackles, 3 TFL (2 sacks). His best season was as a true freshman. Playing time steadily decreased until injury kept him out.

I primarily disagree with take #2 and unless he emerges over the season, so does Franklin. He IS NOT going to be the 4th DT. Franklin has pretty much broke the groups down:

Starters - Durant, Ford
Second string - Gilliam, Blanding, Wafle
Fighting for 6th and 7th spot - Andrews, Cook, Adirika

An injury to DDS is about as disastrous as one to Allar.

Would have hoped Andrews was further along but maybe the transition from offensive line in high school is a tough one and slowing his development.

I saw this graphic in reference to starting QBs who are returning. Obviously, DA played more games than these other QBs but you can see the stats are very positive. BTW, the kid from Rutgers is getting a lot of good press along with a WR who is expected to be really good.

The QB transfer to Indiana had great stats at Fresno? He's expected to be very good.

From Cal. It will be interesting to see if Indiana can live up to their top 20 projection or more of a one hit wonder. I think Cignetti is a really good coach so I wouldn't be suprised if they are good again. Not playoff good but much better than their history.

He was hurt most of last year. I believe he's only been at 100% since the spring. As long as the ones ahead of him are really good, it doesn't bother me as much.

The lost in the shuffle player is Artis. 4th year, no mention of being even in the 3rd rung, and I believe he's missed time so far this fall.

Yeah for whatever reason Artis has not ascended up the depth chart and is now passed over by younger guys. It happens every year with guys. I know he is huge so you would think he would be good at clogging the middle and being a space eater but obviously there is a lot more to it than that.

At DT I am really excited to see our depth guys perform. Starting with Gilliam but then also Wafle and Blanding. It would be great to be super stout in the interior line.

Where is Artis in the depth you listed, totally out of the picture?

Andrews played both OL and DL in high school, but the scouts believed his best post H.S. position was OL.

It's been reported that his biggest issue at PSU was shedding bad weight and putting on good weight. Beyond that maybe he just has more natural talent as an olinemen. Who knows. But it seems only the elite DT's come in and contribute at a high level early in their top 10 team careers. So although many believed he approache "elite" as an OL recruit many schools seemed to back off when he had his heart set on playing DT, and there was likely a good reason for that.

Yeah, I think the reason PSU was able to sign him was because they promised him he would play DT. Maybe the coaches need to have a sit down with him and discuss a transition back to OL (Tackle). These are the tough talks that coaches are paid for.

Too bad. Lots of size but I guess he lacks technique.

Definitely something, but your guess makes sense. Look at former Lion/Boilermaker Cole Brevard. He's up top 346 now.
