2025 Breakout Players

I was high on Chaz when he vetballed to PSU. Looking to 2026: Harvey, Williams, Granville, Harris, Kemajou, Coleman, and Jennings. That is seven strong prospects.
It does sound like the young DEs are very talented. We must be doing a great job identifying these guys because none of them are top 100 recruits. They just have what our staff likes and obviously that translates well.

Must want him to be on coverage and return teams

Stick him out there. I wonder if it's a motivation thing. Or that they expect the transfers to perform better than they expected. Denmark didn't get this much talk last year. We were hopeful that he'd perform, but it never materialized into snaps.

Kemajou not being completely green is interesting. He had the spring camp buzz and a early fall camp praise. Considering he was mentioned as part of a 7 man rotation, I feel like it's coming. Again, motivation maybe? Perhaps they want him on special teams as well?

Coleman must have really turned it on. He could be our best Pass rusher by seasons end. Heck, Carter still had groans from many of us halfway through the year about "put him at LB". DE finally clicked for him and nobody looked back.

Franklin I believe mentioned special team participation and performance as a prerequisite when talking about a couple of players that are on the bubble of getting green lighted. In that regard I was kind of expecting one of the athletic LB's to possibly make a push to get green lighted if they were dynamite on special teams. Particularly Arrington as he seemed to generate a bunch of buzz early in Fall camp which seemed to fade away the last couple weeks........

The young LBs will get their 4 games. Perhaps if they show enough, or injuries dictate, more might be in store. They aren't burning a RS for STs only though. Just not enough snaps.

I interpret this as being a better blocker. The little things can end up being big things. All our WRs are going to need to block well given our preponderance to run the ball a lot.
Could be that. Could be knowing assignments better. Perhaps he is limited in play calls right now. We don't know the full story but Coach Franklin seemed to be mentioning special teams for some of these near greens and almost immediately after being asked about Howard.

Tengwall's take, you may already know this...

CJF breaks freshmen down into Green, Yellow, and Red.

Green will play. Yellow may play if a kid in the rotation gets hurt. Red will not play.

Tengwell was a Yellow.

CJF is a "nut" when it comes to special teams. A player moves up at least one whole color by being great on ST. He felt, while not knowing, that a lot of very talented Fr come in under valuing ST because they see themselves as starters. But CJF feels like ST excellence is uber important unless you are a super star.

As the season goes on, kids will get bumps and bruises while more kids move up a color and take their places on the rotation. Tengwall specifically called out some DBs who he thought would get the green light and suspected they did not because they aren't performing on STs.

My interpretation: They will get limited reps in their primary position during OOC and if they learn/accept special teams responsibilities, the door opens for greenlight status and better possibility of increased reps during the entire season.

I 'm glad he is emphasizing special teams play as a path to greenlighting. Urban Meyer had the same standard. He wanted new players to excel on special teams. Load the STs up with athlete's who want to get in the game. That is the pathway to PT for new WRs, CBs, Safties, LBers, and DEs. Show something on STs and earn opportunities at your primary position if the depth chart allows.

I don't believe that. Any position player that doesn't redshirt will get some snaps, but they may be mostly garbage time snaps if that player is a top special teams coverage player but their position is loaded with talent, which I believe has happened in the past. I believe Mack was pretty much a special teams player his true freshman season at PSU. Franklin talks redshirt status over with each player and their families and some just want to play. I was expecting Arrington to do that once the initial reports were of him being a very special athlete were published.

Kinda interesting that we heard alot about Arrington from media but not as much from coaches. Athletic but probably too raw as a LBer. Could be heading for Redshirt unless he wants to play STs and can be effective.

4 got the green light in '23, Mack included. Key element to all their games? Speed.
