Franklin Fired -It’s over...

What we wanted was a 10 win season and a playoff birth.

What we got was 3 and 3 with Big Game James losing to Northwestern
It's not just that. It's a cumulative thing. He had so many opportunities and never broke through. He doesn't know how to get players ready for a game when they don't simply out-talent the other team. But yesterday was an embarrassment. I think that getting Drew hurt with Singleton in the game was a fireable offense on its own. Kotelnicki should probably be fired as well for his role, but that can wait.

Not many programs where players don't like their coach.
Players also like winning, however.
Of course most like their coach, but most coaches are also more superficial/transient. —For better or worse, he built long term relationships with players and families.
—And yes, of course they like winning. Presumably they liked most of the last 12 years (70%+ games were won). —But with high dollar contracts, 3 losses in a row ( under these circumstances) irritates the entitled/immediate gratification crowd…..” you make the money, deliver”. I get it.

I agree with Zakee ( players know). —Got a scalp….we’ll find out.
The players don't have the context on it that long-time fans share. Different cast of players and coaches under Franklin, but the same lack of results, although this was way beyond any previous failures. He can't keep getting away with it.

70% is not acceptable for Penn State.

Our preseason has three wins built in.
There are about 4 games that should even be close per year.

Do the math. His win percentage sucked.

Franklin is a good guy but he made 2 disastrous hires for coordinators. Hard to swallow because so many on his staffs went on yo head coaching jobs.
I don't agree. Both coordinators were very successful in the past. The Kotelnicki/Allar marriage was a disaster. I don't know, but I'd guess that Kotelnicki wanted Pribula, but Franklin chose Allar. If Franklin's goal was to maximize Allar's potential, he should have either brought someone else in at OC who was a better fit for Allar's skillset or encouraged Allar to move on or go Pro. Knowles had success at Ohio State, regardless of how they spin it now. But his system isn't known for immediate success. It was a bad combination in this all-in season, perhaps.

I understand your point, and I don’t ( largely) disagree….but does ANYBODY really have better context than the players? I doubt it

Yep, and the most important job for "managers" is hiring. It seems Franklin had a reasonable approach with his list of coaches that he maintained for all the types of coaches he could need going forward. And he had a good many long tenured coaches/coordinators that really did a good job. But his recent coordinator hires, outside of Diaz who fell into his lap, were not very good. And a couple of them seemed to be his dream hires that when they came available he fired guys he had only hired a year or two previously. Like he was throwing darts.

Yes, I agree both coordinators were successful in the past, but neither adapted to the current talent on the field ( this year). This could be completely on Franklin, although he gives wide swaths to coordinators as he acts ( and sadly coaches) like a CEO.
—I agree with you 100% on the Kotelnicki/QB assessment
—Knowles is clearly good, but his “complicated “ defense effectively “vapor locked” high end athletes attempting to process “4th year particle physics “…..he muted their talent. Once this was apparent, simplifying/adjusting needed done. He was unable or unwilling to do so

Two best coaches on the team seem to be Smith and Poindexter. Wonder if either will be considered for the permanent HC job. Seems like they will go outside, but I would be happy if Smith ends up on the new staff in his current position. Doubt Poindexter would stay as he's headed for a HC job before long. Smith on the other hand is a PSU letterman.

Barnes is also a letterman and I don't really blame him for this year's DL drop off. Each of DE and DT lost 3 very experienced and talented players with only 1 true returning starter. You can't replace all those "men" with "boys" and expect to not miss a beat. Barnes likely has a bright future in coaching, at PSU or elsewhere.
If you fire a head coach with a $50,000,000 buy out, you need a home run replacement. It’s not going to be Terry Smith.

Forget about winning percentage. 1 win and 25 losses against top ten teams is unacceptable. After his B1G championship, did he ever beat a team with better or equal talent? I still say Cignetti for the quickest rebuild and playoffs.
I am still befuddled that the offensive coaching staff never tried intermediate or 20 YD+ passes. How many qbs want to play a dink and donk short passing offense. PS His B1G championship was won on several 20+ yard passing tds.
Kotelnicki's offense can only work 8f the qb is the best running back.

Yep, Godwin, Blacknall......

In today's game it take WR's, WR's, WR's in addition to a playmaking QB. And even when PSU had Dotson, or Washington, they really didn't have a stable of WR talent like we have had at RB. Next coach has to, along with the WR coach he brings, go out and get top WR talent. And not a bunch of smurfs.....
