I think we've been a little disappointed in our QB play so far

Drew has made some nice plays, but has also missed what should be easy throws in other cases. There was a graphic at some point Saturday that showed stats for some of the other top QBs, and Drew was the only one with a completion rate in the 50-60% range. But then look at Texas. Arch Manning was 11-25 for 114 yards, 1 TD, and 1 interception against UTEP. So these things happen, even if your name is Manning.

I'm sure that Drew will get things worked out. I just hope it happens sooner rather than later.

We'll see how Arch does when he gets three years under his belt. IU QB Mendoza had a rating of almost 300 against those pesky ISU Sycamores. 5 TDs, 0 INTs
Been talked about by others, including Tengwall... Kotelnicki's scheme/philosophy, Drew's style, and Franklin's insistence (i.e. stubbornness) need to find some sort of effective compromise.

We'll see what happens. I think it is clear that the offense is working on what isn't working and not running plays that work. I think PSU can hit the deep out all day long against the teams they've played. Having said that, Allar hasn't looked sharp at all.

I've got faith in Allar, but I've got more faith in Andy K as our OC. The offense has appeared to be haphazard so far, and that isn't AK. Any offense would run a working play over and over and over. We haven't been doing that.

His intermittent play needs to stabilize…he’s gotta get out of his own head. —Virtually Every time he has to roll out and throw, or is running the 2 minute drill ( smaller menu) , he gets it done like a 1st round draft choice. When he’s running plays in the pocket and “running progressions”, he’s “hit and miss”….like a late round draft choice. This is his 3rd year starting…. And has the keys to a Ferrari . Things need to coalesce and become fast and smooth.

Pretty fair assessments. Although something not mentioned is that Drew had some balls that hit a couple of the presumably million-dollar receivers in the hands, and they dropped them. But still agreed that most other times, it was Drew missing the target, or spotting an open receiver late and giving the defender time to catch up, or throwing to the covered guy when a receiver was open in the middle of the field.

There were some bright spots, as you mention. I wonder if Drew is overthinking things due to the coaches giving him too much to think about, or if the massive expectations for this season are weighing on him.

Hard to say…maybe both. Expectations are high, and the offense is complicated. He also doesn’t have Pribula “pushing” him this year, and I think the lack of competition may not be a good thing. The other side of that coin is that when Beau was here, he had a proven, dependable back up, and that kind of frees you up to “just play” …no restrictions. —-Ultimately, I think it will work itself out….but when is a mystery to me.

I was thinking about the latter being a real possibility. He knows this is the year and he gets one shot to move solidly into that 1st round or even top 10 draft grade. And he has all day every day to think about it with 1 class.

I have little faith in him. He has struggled against one of the weakest schedules in division 1. He is still reliving the ND game in his head. He has not beaten an elite team in his career. Unless Franklin hires a sports psychologist in the bye week it will be a potentially embarrassing L. I hate to be pessimistic as I am generally the eternal optimist, but when things don’t click vs the worst teams in the country there is something significantly wrong with HackAllar.

I'm not giving up on him. 1) He's a good young man and a great ambassador for our program; 2) He took a step forward last year; 3) He may just be trying too hard. He clearly cares. He clearly wants to lead us there. He just needs some things to click again.

I say, simplify some things. Help him make quick reads. Get him some easy reads and let him run again when he needs to do it. Let him play loose.

I am of course rooting for him to completely turn it around for his sake and a PSU W and will never give up cheering for him, but there’s a body of evidence that is running from the ND game through the first three games of the season that he is plagued by negative thoughts. We need to run an uptempo offense that removes his brain from the equation. The first three games were really bad. His passing rating is pathetically low and our strength of schedule is one of the worst in all of d1.

I'm convinced we held quite a bit of the offense back. I think we'll see better execution in 2 weeks although Oregon is going to have the athletes to better match it. We were working on our weaknesses I believe. That's what it looked like to me.

For the most part everyone here loves Allar as a young man. But every QB on a football field wants to lead and make plays. So far against what has to be the weakest schedule for any top 30 team Allar has not made nearly enough plays. And we still see open WR's over the middle breaking wide open and Allar forcing the fall into coverage.

I'm also not convinced that the new WR's are an improvement over the 2024 WR's. Pena seems to get open and make some plays in the short game from the slot, but will that work vs top 20 defenses? Hudson has proven he can pretty consistently catch the ball, but doesn't seem to have the speed or moves of a true #1 WR. And Ross so far has not shown he's a legit deep threat vs a good defense and his speed doesn't seem as electric as had been advertised.

I get the comments about not showing much of the real offense vs the 3 OOC teams. But it seems the best thing PSU has going for it going into the Oregon game is that PSU ran for 300 yards in last seasons game and PSU returns basically the whole OL from that Game as well as the RB's. I don't have any optimism that the PSU passing game has take a step forward from last year's passing game at this point, but I'm hoping that Allar and the WR's can prove me wrong.....

I guess we'll find out if it's time to panic on 9/27.

Oh I have concerns and would love to see our offense moving it up and down the field at will. But I do think that we've held a lot back and possibly haven't really seen our offense yet. There are some concerning signs but I'm reserving judgement right now.

  1. 1) Agree
  2. 2) Only a modest step forward. Remember his final passes against OSU, Oregon, and ND.
  3. 3) It's absolutely in his head but he's now an experienced senior. I'm worried that it won't click.
  4. 4) I think they told him to avoid running against the weak teams. I'm confident that there will be designed running plays for him against Oregon.

If you flash back to the 2024 season, Allar managed to complete 41 of 58 passes for 729 yards and eight touchdowns in the first three games against West Virginia, Bowling Green, and Kent State. He also completed nearly 71 percent of his passes, while throwing just one interception, and rushing for 77 yards on 18 carries.

In the team’s first three games this season against Nevada, FIU, and Villanova, Allar has completed 57 of 88 passes for 626 yards and four touchdowns. Allar also threw one interception while rushing for 27 yards on 10 carries. That is a schedule that didn’t include a Power Four team compared to the previous season either.
