Miami - Notre Dame game

ND's DBs could be called PI on just about every play. After the totally obvious one where they tackled the WR who beat him deep, the very next play the same guy has his arm wrapped around the WR turning him and they don't call it. It's like every play.

At least they can say they played a top 10 team. They could easily run the table with their schedule.
That was the fear. They should have been 12-0 with that schedule. The only other ranked team that Notre Dame plays is Texas A&M next week and they struggled to beat Texas San Antonio. Boise was ranked this week at #25 but was blown out.

I also would not doubt if Miami turns out not to be top 10. They at least still play 3 teams that will be ranked in Florida, Florida St, and SMU. I could see Miami losing a couple of those.

Miami's three runs up the middle before the field goal is what loses games.
Miami's coach must have went to the James Franklin school of playing not to lose vs playing to win. That's exactly how Franklin accumulated his current record vs the bugeyes.

Fortunately Miami was able to hang on. But instead of beating the Domers by 2+ TD's the close score will be looked at as a very minor blemish on ND's resume. ND's remaining schedule seems to be the weakest in P4 football so they can scate into the playoff rested and healthy.

The B10 and SEC need to negotiate the next playoff format such that ND can't just skate into the playoffs and get a bye without playing a legit schedule. Stand up against ND and let them earn a spot. I'd love to see both Bama and ND on the sidelines come December.

For the last decade+ I have felt that P4 conference teams should stop scheduling ND all together. Let them join a conference and play by the same rules or turn into a relic of the past.

What you suggest about the SEC and Big 10 standing up is not only the right thing to do but it is also in those conferences' financial interest. Why should ND get to keep all the money from a free pass to the playoffs? If the other conferences don't understand that financially it makes sense to use their combined leverage to force ND to play by the same rules, then they're tools.

It's a multifaceted issue.

The ACC needs Notre Dame. With their 5 game agreement, it creates extra games that will have eyes. With the big 2 already eating the biggest 6 teams from the PAC 12 and Big 12, the ACC has no allies and is a GoR away from being raided as well.

Money. ND has NBC and a fan base that watches. Including ND playoff wise adds those eyes.

The biggest issue in blocking ND out is nobody will work together to do this. The ACC would rather die a slow death than help the big 2. The big 2 are making a fortune and neither side is willing to box ND out because the moment they do agree to join, boom! Next contract value rises even more and trumps the otherside.

And then you have ND in absolutely no hurry to join a conference because they get preferential treatment for the playoff, they have their own independent NBC deal that they don't share, and they still have a varied schedule: 5 ACC games, A&M, Arkansas, Purdue and USC gives them 2 SEC and Big 10 opponents for cross conference clarity, and then they get to keep Navy and Stanford on there because "tradition" while those are easy wins.

ND is skimming the profits that Big 10 and SEC would get by 1) not joining a conference and 2) scheduling such that they almost can't possibly lose 2 or more games even if they sleep walk through the season. So they get 1 full share of the BCS payout every year until the conferences get tired of pi$$ing away that money. They could have that share without ND.

If ND joins the SEC or Big 10 (more likely), then that conference gets another BCS share and divides it amongst its conference members. That's how it should be. And the ACC and Big 12 can have their own little playoff that very few people watch because it is second tier. SEC and Big 10 schools share the entire playoff payout.

ND doesn't have to share playoff money with other conference members.

And that is why eventually the conferences will wise up and box them out until they join a conference. It's not personal. It's business.

That's the thing. Both of the P2 want ND in their conference. Any conjoined effort to box ND out will also include the backdoor "join with us" that we saw the Big 10 do to the ACC and PAC 12 during the Alliance heyday (that lasted about 16 months).

I don't think the P2 is ultimately working towards an NFL-lite 2 conference league. I think they know the other leagues add value to the sport. They just want the most money, the most playoff access, etc.

ND doesn't have to share playoff money with other conference members.

Exactly. They have zero incentive to join a conference as long as they keep getting preferential treatment.

The biggest issue IMO, is the fact that they don’t ever have to play a conference championship game. This combined with their cupcake schedule gives them an advantage. They are guaranteed with a two loss year. I will always root against them.
