I watched Happy Gilmore 2 this weekend and it seems to be creating quite a controversy. Seems that people either love or hate it. Weirdly, it is actually scoring higher on Rotten Tomatoes than the original.

For me, it had zero plot, and what was there was kind of weird. But I expected that. The original really had very little plot as well. What was in the movie were 74 cameos and a lot of "Easter Eggs" (funny secondary things like pictures on the wall and stuff you normally wouldn't notice the first time you see it). There were several LOL scenes that I thought were great. They spoofed things like having a golfing threesome and getting paired with some weird person. Making fun of LIV tricking up the game. Spoiler Alert: One of my favorites was Jack Niclaus ordering a "tea and lemonade". The waitress says, "Arnold Palmer," and Jack says, "No, I am Jack Nicklaus, but I seem to get that a lot." John Daly was great, as was Scottie Scheffler.

Of course, just about every decent golfer was in the movie, along with several other celebrities.

Best: it was a movie you could see with your family. A pretty good message with no overt wokeness. Just a good time as long as you didn't expect a great plot and enjoy vignettes that make you laugh.

I also saw Formula 1 this weekend. Good movie but needs to be seen in the big theater. Also good with the family as there is almost no sex or wokeness whatsoever.

Also watched it and it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I like a fair amount of Sandler's movies but not all. This one was just terrible.

BTW, I wasn't surprised by this. We saw the new Beetlejuice at the movies and was unimpressed. I'll probably see the new Naked Gun coming out as well and be underwhelmed again. Hollywood has no original ideas. They think that they can just repackage nostalgic films that were good, put very little thought into them, and people will eat it up. I know that they are planning another Goonies and another Spaceballs too. Probably all will suck.

Not sure what you were expecting, but it's exactly what I anticipated and I enjoyed it. It's a Sandler movie, not an epic. Loads of entertaining cameos for those who follow the Tour.

I have a nice surround sound system running through my Yamaha receiver. These days a lot of people have sound bars but they aren't close to the same thing.

I love watching action movies with Dolby Digital or DTS. It's not quite modern theater quality but it's close.

Agreed. I made a similar point in my reviews of the latest Mission Impossible and Jurassic Park movies that we took some grandkids to see. Totally derivative. Lots of noise and special effects with cartoonish DEI material mixed in.

Hollywood hardly tries anymore. They know they can repackage the same stuff according to the same formulas and make a quick $100 million without breaking a sweat.

The other aspect of the lack of creativity and plot is that Hollywood is essentially an elite club now. It's who you know and whose kid you are. The real talent I suspect mostly doesn't break through. So you get the same run down stuff from an industry of nepotism.
