Next coaching candidates

Being honest, I really don’t think about the search and I’m not gullible. After the stinkers that Nebraska played the past two weekends, there is no way he could be a candidate.

He's far from my first choice but I wouldn't rule out a scenario where they dress up his hire as an exciting coaching coup for the simple (unspoken) reason that for the presumed A-list candidates, the Penn State job may not be at all desirable. Reality sucks sometimes but has to be faced nevertheless.

That said, money has a way of making things desirable so who knows.

Meanwhile, it's hard to see anything happening before the end of the season so all this feverish speculation is pointless.

Rhule gets a 3.75 star out of five in the football coach category. Kraft needs a 4.75 coach to win over a large percentage of the fanbase and to gain PR traction for himself and the program. This decision can't be viewed as a predetermined hire of convenience and/or based on his friendship with Rhule.
For a Rhule hire to work, it needs to be sold as Rhule's actually knowing what it takes to win and not that it's a Penn State/Paterno guy "coming home" 😟. Both Rhule and Kraft would need to explain what resources and efforts it will take to immediately acquire talent and what type of football culture will be put into place. For a few dollars more, a guy like Meyer already knows what to do and already has a familiarity with the program.

Agree with all that. It's not that Rhule is a bad guy or even a bad coach but he's certainly not a great coach based on the record nor does he move the needle in a way we desperately need now. I mean, there's a reason his name has not come up on any other vacancy hot board except ours.

Granted, I tend to be a pessimist by nature and hard experience but to me the situation around the program looks like a train wreck at this point. We're losing recruits. Our roster will be raided. Our coordinators appear to be high-priced failures. Our former coach is clearly bitter. The whole thing is a mess.

Then add in the fact that there are numerous other high-profile openings available and probably more yet to come. So competition is fierce and a lot of these other schools have big-time resources at hand.

Who knows, we may strike lightning in a bottle. We may get a lower-tier (on paper) candidate who proves out against the odds. But whoever comes in will be facing very strong headwinds.

As I said above, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they end up going with Rhule and dress the hire up as a home run. But who knows. Unlike a lot of anonymous people on Internet message boards, I don't pretend to have any scoops or sources or inside knowledge. However, what I can see with my own two baby-blue eyes is not good.

If we end up hiring Rhule because he was all that we can get after other top names said no, then we just have to accept that. If we end up with him because Pat Kraft had this planned all along, then that will be a problem.

Did he bring in the receivers or was it the program? Who will Knowles be bringing in?
Will Knowles still be on the staff? If his defense takes 2 years to learn and there will likely be a turnover of a fair bit of the roster, can PSU tolerate another year of learning the D?

It takes the Stanford and Duke defenses just 18 months to learn his system, so it can be done.

might be Hartline. Maybe he will bring some other coaches with him as well from OSU
If Hartline leaves, and he eventually will, I hope it is outside the Big ten so giving Ohio State a loss isn't part of his job. He has stated many times that he loves Ohio State.

If I were an Ohio State fan, I am certain I would want him to.go outside of the conference. Larry Johnson said many times that he lioved PSU but then when to OSU. The situation was different, but it was strange he left to go to OSU.

Rhule would ensure the program's mediocrity and unimportance for the next five years until he gets fired. I'm not sure why Kraft or the fanbase would want that. It's irrational. Maybe your team should hire him.
I don't necessarily understand it, either. I'm just reporting what I'm told. Don't shoot the messenger. Love the "your team" jab. How original

More than likely, the latest texts didn't reach you. Just to keep you in the loop, there's been some very recent pushback by some very powerful people regarding the Rhule coronation. I'll keep you posted while you work things out on your end. Regards.
