Next coaching candidates

More than likely, the latest texts didn't reach you. Just to keep you in the loop, there's been some very recent pushback by some very powerful people regarding the Rhule coronation. I'll keep you posted while you work things out on your end. Regards.
Or maybe - just maybe - I know something you don't. 🤫

If Hartline leaves, and he eventually will, I hope it is outside the Big ten so giving Ohio State a loss isn't part of his job. He has stated many times that he loves Ohio State.
No doubt he loves Ohio State, but I’m pretty sure the right amount of $ in the right circumstances would be incentive for him to move on. Don’t think it’s going to be PSU, most likely the pros long term.

I pretty much know for a fact who the next coach will be and who it won't be. 😎
It won't be a successful, seasoned coach, either retired or currently working, cuz he wouldn't want to come to Penn State based on the other openings. And it won't be a risky, learn on the job assistant coach, cuz Penn State wants somebody who can come in running. So, with that said, it can only be one person.

James Franklin?

They key word is "reportedly"

Will Compton, former Nebraska linebacker and now a vocal booster, instantly capitalized on the false news about Matt Rhule’s extension. “Husker Nation, just got off the phone, I can tell you with ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY that Coach Rhule has not signed an extension,” Compton posted on X.

I see SI added an "Editor's note" to the story:

>>Editor's note: At the time of publishing, there was no official announcement for a signed contract extension. As of this note (9:00 a.m. CDT), there has been no announcement. New information indicates an extension has not been signed at this time. The story below is unaltered to reflect the original story, outside of this note.<<

I guess we'll see what happens...or doesn't...over the next day or two or three.

Includes some analysis and opinions regarding records at Temple and Baylor. Most give Rhule a B-, with either a tracking up or tracking down. No one gives the hire a home run.
With that said, if Rhule came to PSU, then a strong GM is in order so that Holgerson, old man Raiola, and other "non-home run" decisions are avoided. Also not sure about Rhule's portal and HS recruiting salemanship. And would Kraft risk his career and reputation on a friendship? IMO, a good AD hires coaches but keeps them at arms length because the day will come where they will need to be let go.

On October 30, 2025, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln officially announced that head football coach Matt Rhule has signed a two-year contract extension, securing his position through the 2032 season. This move comes amid speculation linking Rhule—Nebraska's third-year coach and a Penn State alum—to the Nittany Lions' head coaching vacancy following James Franklin's firing earlier in the month.Key Details of the Extension
  • Original Contract:
  • Rhule signed an eight-year deal worth up to $50 million upon joining Nebraska in November 2022, after stints at Temple, Baylor, and the NFL's Carolina Panthers. His base salary started at $5.5 million and was set to escalate to $12.5 million by 2030, with bonuses tied to performance.

  • Extension Terms:
    • Adds two years to the existing deal, extending it to 2032. Current annual salary: Approximately $8.5 million (ranking him in the top 15 among college coaches). Buyout Clause: Increased to $15 million if Rhule leaves after the 2025 season (up from $5 million), effectively deterring moves to other programs this cycle. Additional Incentives: Includes a $1 million salary bump for each College Football Playoff qualification.
