Next coaching candidates

On October 30, 2025, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln officially announced that head football coach Matt Rhule has signed a two-year contract extension, securing his position through the 2032 season. This move comes amid speculation linking Rhule—Nebraska's third-year coach and a Penn State alum—to the Nittany Lions' head coaching vacancy following James Franklin's firing earlier in the month.Key Details of the Extension
  • Original Contract:
  • Rhule signed an eight-year deal worth up to $50 million upon joining Nebraska in November 2022, after stints at Temple, Baylor, and the NFL's Carolina Panthers. His base salary started at $5.5 million and was set to escalate to $12.5 million by 2030, with bonuses tied to performance.

  • Extension Terms:
    • Adds two years to the existing deal, extending it to 2032. Current annual salary: Approximately $8.5 million (ranking him in the top 15 among college coaches). Buyout Clause: Increased to $15 million if Rhule leaves after the 2025 season (up from $5 million), effectively deterring moves to other programs this cycle. Additional Incentives: Includes a $1 million salary bump for each College Football Playoff qualification.

Yup, there goes the safety net as some were calling the Rhule option.

As I posted earlier in this thread, it may come as a rude surprise to some...but it shouldn't...that the Penn State job may not be coveted by A-list candidates.

An up-and-comer from a lesser school or coordinator looking to make a breakthrough...different story.

Then again, who knows.

Meanwhile, there's a lot of buzz around Franklin and Virginia Tech. I don't think that scenario would be great for us but it is in many ways the perfect landing spot for James.

Even though Rhule was not the answer, how dare he turn us down! 😠

I have to believe that the new coach had been identified and has agreed to a contract which will be announced when the time is right.

Just get a hands-on football guy, not a CEO guy. Players respect that.
Without a GM, in this day and age, any P4 head coach has to be a CEO. As a result, it’s not just a Head Coach hire that has to be a home run, you also need a home run GM hire. Add to that, you need near unlimited NIL money.

I would not like to be in Kraft’s shoes.

I thought someone on this board was that certain it was rule
The top decision-makers at PSU Athletics figured out that he was a leaking confidential info. They, in turn, set a trap and fed him bad information that he, of course, fed to that preeminent media outlet, HVFFA. At least, that's what my inside sources are telling me.

What about Key for Ga Tech? Issue for us is they probably make the playoff.

Of the current head coaches you got...
-Key
-Drinkwitz
-Lea
-Brohm
-Golesh

I think the Tulane guy is gone to LSU.

I think Drinkwitz could go to Florida.

That leaves Key, Lea, Brohm, Golesh.

I do not feel we rule out a coach who gets to the playoff. We need the best guy even if they don't get hired until mid to late January.

Lea is a defensive guy so he may not be the favorite given our desperate need to develop a better offense. He has Pavia now but is the offense for Vandy really that good?

Key has done a great job with Haynes King or is that all Haynes King? He was a guard and his background is an OL coach. He coached the OL at Bama from 2016-2018. These were some of the Bama dynasty years although he had NFL talent to work with.

Brohm and Golesh seem to be guys who can build a sophisticated passing game.

Excellent. PSU did/does not need him.

Andy Frank?

Andy Frank?
IMO, a CFB GM should be more than an analytics/spreadsheet person. If Kraft wasn't the AD, he might be a good GM. In other words, I'd want an experienced upper management type with energy, confidence, and power to make things happen. Think a Meyer as GM and a Hartline as HC.

I brought this up before, but Franklin's background of lower Bucks County, E. Stroudsburg QB followed by many asst coaching stints for various skill positions, and maybe never having experienced a Penn State or Div 1 game until later in his career makes me think that the finesse, explosive play culture were ingrained. Maybe he didn't understand the toughness and resilience aspects of the game and believed that athleticism overcomes all.

LSU is convinced they're landing Lane Kiffin

Also, now that Dylan Raiola broke his leg and is out for the season, should be able to beat them and their backup QB
