Penn State #2 in AP poll

Against Texas, no less. We both had similar seasons last year, making the semi-final and losing competitive games. Texas was in the
playoff the year before, so maybe an edge there. But we have a 3rd-year QB, and they are breaking in a new starter, no matter who his uncles are. I'd give us a slight edge right now. Plus, they will quite possibly lose to Ohio State in Columbus to start the season.
Last I saw Ohio St was favored by 2.5 over Texas. So probably a push or lean Texas on a neutral field but it's in Columbus.

That’s what you call “ establishing a narrative “. They’ll beat each other up and say a 3 or 4 loss SEC team is better than a 2 loss……name your conference
Absolutely correct. Why do you think so few of the SEC teams play anybody good out of conference? Because if they lose an out of conference game, then it helps eat away at their narrative that the SEC is just so much better than everyone else.

That game is a toss up. I think it will rest alot on the performance of the new QBs for both teams, though Arch Manning has more experience and then how OSU's new coordinators game plan and have prepared their newbies at several positions. TEXAS has huge Lineman on both sides of the ball. Do they try to wear ISU down with a ground & pound with limited passing and on defense, stymie the run and force Sayin or Keinholtz (sp?) to beat them with the pass. Jeremiah Smith is a generational talent and Carnel Tate is excellent but the ball has to be delivered. I'll be watching.

And 1 less conference game allows an average of .5 more wins per team. That really needs to be corrected. You have to try to compare teams on at least a similar standard.

Surprised Iowa isn't a little higher in the others receiving votes. I'm not sure that I'd have Nebraska above them.

Lindy's has Iowa ranked #33.

You can never take them lightly playing at Kinnick but we go there off a home game against Northwestern which is a favorable draw schedule-wise.

Anyway, they return 5 starters on O and 5 on D, and the most intriguing addition is the QB transfer from South Dakota State who racked up over 10,000 yards passing during four years while winning two FCS titles in a row in the process.

He's coming off a shoulder injury and apparently successful surgery...and is said to be at 100% readiness for the season.

Iowa could be a surprise team in the conference but on paper we outman them considerably and should be a solid favorite to win the game. In fact, the early FanDuel line has us favored by 10.5 points. But I doubt it will be a walk in the park.

As will be the case with any game this season, balancing the power game using that OL with the desire to create explosive plays will be key. If running between the tackles works, then continue doing it, but have other things ready when needed. No need to throw deep on first down for the sake of it.

Yup, I think the difference between a merely good season, which is far short of expectations going in, and a final-4 season, which really is where the bar has been set, is Drew. Can he make plays at critical times against the best teams on our schedule?

He did it against USC last year and it proved the difference not just in that game but arguably in our whole season. Against Ohio State at our place? Not so much.

Then again, he doesn't need to light up the Bucks at the Shoe. The issue is all the other teams on our schedule. If he takes care of business in all the those games, we'll be in good shape.

I mean, OK, yes, Franklin is under the gun in that regard too. But it's amazing how good the coach can look when the players, especially the QB, make plays.

First place votes: 23
Second: 19
Third: 16
Fourth: 5
Fifth: 2 (Florida and Kentucky writers)
Sixth: 1 (Auburn writer)

Auburn still butthurt about the beating we put on them. SEC just SECing Texas into the #1 preseason spot.

The interesting thing is, if the 3 outlier votes were just 2nd or 3rds, we would have been preseason #1 (Texas had a 5 pt lead over us)

only one voter had PSU outside the top five. That is the Auburn beat writer.

Most people are regional IMO. Them southerners don't like them things north of Richmond. Of the many Big10 folks residing in AZ, the only ones who make eye contact and connect when I'm wearing PSU gear are those NOT from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, and Illinois. It helps explain those legacy Big10 writers voting for Nebraska in 1994. The new West Coast Big10 fanbase, however, aren't insecure, don't hate, and are more receptive.

I'm bad. I'm nationwide.

Good points. My cursory look at he list (trying to decipher the logos with my old tired eyes), I found the following results interesting:

The vote whose logo I could figure out -- and where he/she ranked Penn State:
First, the original Big Ten crew

1. Ohio State (has 3 voters) -- 1, 3, and 3
2. Michigan (2) -- 2, 2
3. Wisconsin -- 2
4. Illinois -- 3
5. Northwestern -- 2
6. Minnesota -- 1
7. Mich State -- 2
[ I couldn't figure out logos for Iowa, Purdue, or Indiana]

For the new members of the conference

11. USC -- 1
12. Maryland -- 1
13. Rutgers -- 1
14. Nebraska -- 1
15. Oregon -- 1
16. Washington -- 3
17. Penn State -- 1
[couldn't find a UCLA voter]

Conclusion -- it does appear that most of the original Big Ten crowd (8 of the 10 voters) still has a problem putting Penn State and #1 together.

Who did the 8 of 10 vote #1?

Who did the 8 of 10 vote #1?
Dave, are you too Lazy to check the chart yourself? [just kidding you]

For whom they voted is not so relevant to the post by Frank Lee I was responding to. He mentioned how regional most voting is but added that legacy Big Ten writers didn't vote PSU #1 in 1994. I then scanned the chart to see for whom writers with Big Ten school logos voted.

Now to answer your question: it would appear at my glance that most voted for Texas while 2 picked the Buckeyes.

My point is that while conference loyalty might exist in the SEC, similar league affinity seems to elude the Nittany Lions.

And I do hope you realize I was only referencing your name above for humor. No offense is meant.
