Texas flash flood kills 24...20 still missing at youth camp

A storm system set up over the central part of the state and dumped a foot of rain in only hours, sweeping away homes and a camp for girls on the Guadalupe River. 20 girls still missing at last report.

It's scary how quickly such floods can materialize. One victim said she woke up at 2:30 AM and found the river running fast but saw nothing too alarming. One hour later she was fleeing for her life:

Here is a series of videos showing how quickly the river rises. This is well downstream of the kids campsite as that was hit at 4:00 AM and these videos are in daylight.

The river rose 26 feet in 45 minutes. Incredible.

Four videos in thread….

The Texas Hill Country all the way to AZ has caliche and limestone almost at the surface and waters from heavy rains are quickly caught and funneled. I recall Pedernales Falls SP in Central Texas has a warning sign to clear out in case of heavy rains. Those narrow, slow, muddy rivers like the Guadalupe, Brazos, and Colorado (the TX one) don't look imposing, but that's when it doesn't rain. With all that said, how was this camp's location chosen?

And it can rain 10-20 miles away….sunshine where you are…..and floods come rushing through without warning.

I guess the word "flash" before flood is apt.

It can happen even in creek and stream beds when a storm system with certain atmospheric conditions sets up.

The camp has been there for almost 100 years...and as it happens, they're calling this a once-in-100-years weather event.

Ironically, the location was chosen in part due to its proximity to the water and the recreational activities facilitated by that.

Stand by for the usual round of second-guessing and blame-casting when the dust settles from this tragedy. They knew rain was in the forecast but nobody expected or predicted the insane amount that fell in a very short period of time. In the middle of the night, things deteriorated at lightning speed.

Horrible, horrible scenario. And because that was a camp where they were supposed to disconnect nobody had cell phones or other electronic media. So any alert, if that was even possible (hearing that this was one of those situations where it couldn't even be predicted), wouldn't have been received there.

There should always be kind person as a contact.

And that county’s emergency services should have sent people to warn campers up and down the river.

Flash flooding is pretty common in the entire South West and plans should be in place.

This same area was hit hard in 1987 and over ten people died. With modern technology and a known history this should not have happened.

So it turns out the NWS did issue a Flood Watch for the impacted area late on the evening of July 3, several hours before the storm system exploded and then stalled in place causing the situation on the river to get completely out of hand in a very short period of time.

Latest death count is 46 with 20 campers still unaccounted for.

Some hard questions will be asked...and should be...but the Usual Suspects are of course right away attempting to politicize this disaster with the standard bullshit blather on the standard bullshit issues.

Sasha Stone took note of the above reaction in a dynamite column published this morning. Link below.

>>It’s dark on the Left now. They’ve reached that predictable moment where inflicting pain is all they have left.<<

I call it rabies of the soul. These people are death-worshippers. There's no reaching them. There's no compromise possible with them. It's win or lose...us or them. That's the political landscape of America 2025:

Michael Savage nailed it years ago. It truly is a mental disorder. Delusion, self esteem, maybe both.

Anyone who has ever lived out west and are in the outdoors knows that, if you're in and around washes and dry gullies, hell comes fast and furious from rain. It's amazing the amount of folks blaming weather svc cuts for these deaths. It's all over the McAndrew board, including the NY Times. Just like what happened in NC, you can't predict Mother Nature, and she always wins.

The sad part is, Pennsylvanians on another board are blaming Trump and cuts. Like Pennsylvanians don't know about how fast floods happen. So, all the deaths in NC were Biden's fault I guess.

CA wildfires happen and a certain segment of our population goes all in on the political attacks. They criticize the state, generally. They criticize the people in the state, based on political affiliation. They criticize the response. "It could have and should have been avoided, and it's all the Dems' fault." They take great joy in this. The POTUS attacks the state, and they rally around the POTUS's criticism. They even wanted to withhold aid, or conditionally withhold aid, based on these political divisions.

To a man/woman, that segment of the population either took great joy in this, or sat silently while their compatriots reveled in it. They've repeated this at every natural disaster which could be twisted to somehow implicate someone of another political ideology.

Flash forward (no pun intended) to another tragic natural disaster ... these same folks act incredulous that someone could blame folks from the opposition political party/ideology.

"These people are DISGUSTING. This is just who they are! How could they criticize the response, or the actions that may have led to this?! Evil! Why I'd never ..."

But you did. You have. Many times. Gleefully. With joy and vengeance in your hearts. You will again. Some of you are so vapid, you don't even see the hypocrisy. Others of you are fully aware of it, but don't care ... thinking it's a game and all is fair and love and blame. You are those very same people.

Well there was that whole thing in CA about not clearing the brush, dried up reservoirs, slow emergency response times, high paid patronage officials, and permit hoops for rebuilding. IMHO, one side attacks the causes/incompetence, while and the other side attacks for political advantage.
